I played with a Reggae band last night...
One Drop kind of stuff. A little slow for my taste since I like the earlier incarnations of Reggae which is faster and more upbeat. But it is what it is.

I've noticed a trend with Reggae fans, they really think Bob Marley invented the whole genre. Not that I'm complaining about Bob. I like some of his music a lot. But these days, it seems if you listen to Bob Marley and Sublime you're instantly a Reggae expert. I tried telling one cat about bands, like The Maytals, or genres, like Ska and Calypso, which predated Reggae. It was like talking to a brick wall.

I don't know if I'm complaining or just observing. But it seems kind of surreal to me.

1. I thought Bob Marley invented middle-class suburban white teenaged stoners.

2. Don't be so quick to judge
The Grateful Dead had just as much to do with it.

6. Not bad
But again, not my typical fare - I'm not a big fan of the one-drop. Interesting chord changes though.

4. I find in general that people
Who are casual fans of music genre's tend not to pay attention to roots...just to the Big Names

5. I don't know, though
Reggae fans are pretty devout. I just don't get the obvious ignorance. I liken it to being a Christian and not knowing who Moses is.

18. Rastafarianism, initially, had little to do with pre-roots Reggae
You don't have to be into religion to be a Reggae fan of any kind. Initially, Skinheads in England were the biggest market in it's infancy.

Many artists denounced the saturation of Rastafarianism in Jamaican music since it's message is one somewhat secular.

7. I too have encountered that
and when I mention ska, they say something like "wasn't that the fad from 10 years ago?"

To which I have to respond, "actually, it's about as old as rock and roll is"

9. You see that a lot in certain genres of music
There's a whole generation of kids who think Green Day invented punk. They kind of know who the Sex Pistols and the Ramones are, but think that Iggy Pop is somebody's grampa.

19. Don't they even know "The Harder They Come"?
Jimmy Cliff? Man, that movie was my intro to reggae back in the seventies. I love the title song. But I later got bored with the sound of reggae and I'm not into it at all now.
