I feel like writing something, but don't know what to write about.
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 08:53 AM by Bertha Venation
I know the adage, "write what you know." I'm doing that already, in my years-long project of a book.

I feel like writing just a page, or a few pages, but about what?

Got any suggestions?

1. I never knew the term until recently, but one-page "short short stories"
are now called "flash fiction". They're still kind of difficult for me to write, but I suppose if you really want a challenge, pick something within sight and write about it :)

I had a photography instructor in university that called a similar technique "boredom photography." Take anything that is everyday in the world around you and create from it.

Are you going to post it to the Writing group?

4. Depends upon if I like what I write.
It might be that I need to write to Aunt Margie, I dunno. It's just this restlessness.

I'll try the "flash fiction" thing. Y'know, I don't remember a single g-d thing about writing from HS. Hell, I barely remember HS.

2. How about a short story...
about a student's attempt to solve a calculus problem? And in their struggle they ultimately learn something about themselves. And then they go have some ice cream.

5. Sounds like an episode of the Brady Bunch.
Except I doubt any of those vapid children could handle calculus at all. (I know I couldn't...)

Maybe I'll write about ice cream.

6. Guess what, someday you will be old and will want to remember certain things
and they will be GONE!1 So in the situation of the o.p., write down vignettes of people and events as far back from NOW as you can remember NOW. In your future great age, this will be invaluable.

7. Put your pen to the paper, and see what happens.
I do that sometimes, and on occasion, it's quite wonderful and equally fascinating to see what comes out.

Just start putting words together without censoring them - there's a story or something sitting there in your head, and if you stop thinking about it, the story can come out.

9. You could ghost write the horror of my last year
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 11:17 AM by Jamastiene
of working with a nightmare that is finally over with. I never signed any confidentiality agreement, so I can speak freely.

The horror of that job was so bad, that people took everything public about me, including jokes, and twisted them into the worst crap you can possibly imagine. I am now compared to Aileen Wuornos because of a joke I made on a blog one time. A friend of mine thought that blog was funny and suggested I name my blog accordingly. I did, because my friends understand me, but then the public got a hold of it and now I'm The Most Horrible Person In The World O-fficially. According to one punk rock musician's fans, I make George W. Bush look like Santie Clause.

That's just a small portion of the last 15 months of my life. It only scratches the surface too. :silly:

10. You know how you sometimes remember just a moment from your past,

...and it may be a big moment, or (more often than not) it may be nearly insignificant in every way and you have no idea why you even remember it in such great detail, but it keeps percolating up in your memory? Write those down.

Or take a look at oneighty's journal, I LOVED the short stories he wrote. Just one or two paragraphs, but oh man he could pull visions and emotions out of a few simple words like nobody I ever saw.

11. Write what you imagine your cat is thinking about you at this exact moment.
But write in third person and don't mention that the observation comes from a cat.
