1. Pocahontas is one of my favorites.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plUVX-_i6Sg&feature=related

Aurora borealis
The icy sky at night
Paddles cut the water
In a long and hurried flight
From the white man
To the fields of green
And the homeland
We've never seen.

They killed us in our tepee
And they cut our women down
They might have left some babies
Cryin' on the ground
But the firesticks
And the wagons come
And the night falls
On the setting sun.

They massacred the buffalo
Kitty corner from the bank
The taxis run across my feet
And my eyes have turned to blanks
In my little box
At the top of the stairs
With my Indian rug
And a pipe to share.

I wish a was a trapper
I would give thousand pelts
To sleep with Pocahontas
And find out how she felt
In the mornin'
On the fields of green
In the homeland
We've never seen.

And maybe Marlon Brando
Will be there by the fire
We'll sit and talk of Hollywood
And the good things there for hire
And the Astrodome
And the first tepee
Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me
Marlon Brando, Pocahontas and me
Pocahontas.

6. "Powderfinger," "Cowgirl in the Sand," "Walk On," "Rockin' in the Free World," "Eldorado,"
"Dance Dance Dance" (AKA "Love Is a Rose" with different lyrics), "Harvest Moon" (the song, not the album), "Cortez the Killer," "Mansion on the Hill," "Like a Hurricane," etc. etc. Honestly, I own only a fraction of the guy's albums and it'd *still* be almost impossible for me to come up with a single-disc "best of." Maybe one electric disc and one acoustic?

Awesome acoustic take of "Powderfinger" I just heard for the first time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-wZIQcCsmI

And here's "Dance Dance Dance," which wasn't released in any form (except by a Young-less Crazy Horse) until a couple of years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7h9QPzclWk

And to balance out that stuff, here's a nice long live version of "Like a Hurricane": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Obfci1CIqq8

15. It's a throw back to Harvest...
The album that came out when I was in 8th grade...

The song has a lot of meaning to me but it is a song that can be fully enjoyed even without the gauzy remembrance of an aging man.

18. CSNY's "Country Girl"...
...it's probably the best CSNY track, period.

Wolfgang's Vault has posted a few CSNY concerts (including a nice two-parter, 09/08/74 Roosevelt Raceway, NY). In some of the commentaries they mention the fact that CSNY's on-stage harmonies often suffered as a mix of poorly set-up sound systems and too many pre-show "refreshments." I've heard some truly horrendous CSNY live bootlegs.

But in the studio, "Country Girl"...what a MOTHER of a track.

This is the track listing from the Neil Young mix CD I have in my car at all times (obviously a "Volume One")...

The Loner
I've Been Waiting For You
Cinnamon Girl
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Down By The River
The Losing End
Cowgirl In The Sand
Tell Me Why
Southern Man
Oh, Lonesome Me
Don't Let It Bring You Down
When You Dance I Can Really Love
Country Girl (CSNY, from "Deja Vu")
Carry On (CSNY, from "Four Way Street"...OK, it's a Stills song, but it's also a guitar dogfight with Young)

:toast:

30. I go through Neil Young phases. Currently, my fave by him is
Out on the Weekend

Think Ill pack it in and buy a pick-up
Take it down to l.a.
Find a place to call my own and try to fix up.
Start a brand new day.

The woman Im thinking of, she loved me all up
But Im so down today
Shes so fine, shes in my mind.
I hear her callin.

See the lonely boy, out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay.
Cant relate to joy, he tries to speak and
Cant begin to say.

She got pictures on the wall, they make me look up
From her big brass bed.
Now Im running down the road trying to stay up
Somewhere in her head.

The woman Im thinking of, she loved me all up
But Im so down today
Shes so fine shes in my mind.
I hear her callin.

See the lonely boy, out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay.
Cant relate to joy, he tries to speak and
Cant begin to say.
