1. possessive plurals throw off a lot of peeps, but some people like to use punctuation
the same way that some like to use polyslyab, polysalab, big words.

2. I hate that. But what I hate more
is putting words in quotation marks unnecessarily. You see this in places like supermarkets. Bananas "ON SALE" Today.

3. ROFL my aunt does that in greeting cards
I'm used to it, since I've received cards from her all my life with those weird quotation marks, but it drives Mr. MG up the wall. A birthday card to our son will usually read something like Dear "MG Jr."--Have a "happy birthday!" Love, "Auntie"
:wtf:

4. If I hadn't put "use's apostrophe's" in quotes then the sarcasm might have been lost
as it often is on DU

5. I didn't think twice about your use--entirely correct there!
And I totally missed the reference in the other post--just thought it was a commiseration, albeit a slight variation. Sheesh, the dangers of PUIV (posting under the influence of a virus). Maybe I'll go do some work now...might be safer...and I'm an editor!

7. I always assume stuff in quotes means sarcasm
So if sign says "on sale" I take it to mean they're messing with us! "On sale" my ass. :silly:

8. Exactly
That's what Mr. MG says when he reads my aunt's greeting cards. " 'MG Jr.'--so that's not really his name?"

15. I make the same assumption.
"On sale" means this is NOT a price reduction.

27. They mean it ironically...
The bananas aren't actually discounted... they're just being offered for sale, hence they are "on sale." (Or is it "on sale". ?)

11. Drives me crazy.
I'm a copy editor, so when I see those apostrophes on plural words, I want so badly to correct the posts. However, since I am a polite person, I just grit my teeth and try to ignore them.

26. YES! My major grammar pet peeve of all time!
When I witness apostrophe abuse, I want to scream - especially if it's on a sign at a restaurant or other public place!
