Smokers: Anybody tried the e-cigarette?
I hate to fork over $69 without a good rec. We've vowed to stop somoking in the house, but going outside is driving me crazy. Anybody tried the e-cigg? Is it a decent substitute?

5. I remember someone saying they were using it on this board.
Keep this kicked and maybe they will chime in. Also if you ask your doctor about Chantix, the new medication seems to work for people who have the desire to quit their nicotine addiction. Or you could try lobelia tea, American Indians used it as a tobacco substitute.

18. re Chantix
if you're going to consider it I would suggest you Google it and see some of the message boards where it's discussed. It has almost a 90% failure rate. My wife used it, and had no desire to smoke while taking it, because it tricks the brain into thinking it is getting nicotine. As soon as she came off of it she started smoking again. Only way to do it, IMHO, is cold turkey. She and I both quit together last August. Wasn't easy, she relapsed on two occasions, each for just one day, but now we're both clear.

I googled and not only found what you stated about the poor success rate, but also regarding the suicidal thoughts and violent behavior of some Chantix users. Glad you and your wife are non-smokers now!

11. I quit 11 months ago using Wellbutrin, 150 mg a day
It was still rough going there for a while, but the cravings and withdrawal symptoms weren't as intense as they are when you try to quit cold turkey. They have a generic now called bupropion. The stuff is cheap and your insurance will probably cover it.

13. I'm not trying to quit at this point.
Hell, I just lost my job, and I've got enough stress as it is. I just don't want to smoke in the house (because I have to sell the damn thing) and don't want to spend all night in the garage or on the deck.

Good for you, though, on quitting! Maybe I will, one of these days.

Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 11:19 AM by hippywife
keep going outside and soon you'll wonder how in the hell anyone ever smoked indoors.

When you get employment with bennies again, try Chantix. I'm using it and it kills the cravings by turning off the pleasure receptors that are stimulated by nicotine, as well as makes cigs taste crappy.

I can't imagine trying to quit long term by just replacing the nicotine delivery method. It's better to not smoke, it's true, but I can imagine it would be easier to take it up again if you're still hooked on the nicotine.

15. The "juice" for ecigs comes in different nicotine strengths, from high to none.
I'm on low nicotine now and the next bottle of juice will have zero nicotine in it. For me, it's giving up the pleasure of smoking, not the nicotine, that is the hard part.

16. I bought one
I don't like the taste, but I'm still going to try to use it and hopefully quit. I bought the epuffer with the lowest nicotine they have. I got the black elite model so that it doesn't look like a real cig in case I take a "vap" in a store or something. I keep forgetting to take it with me so I don't know if there will be problems or not. Shouldn't be. It isn't a cig. No smoke or tobacco.

17. OK, I got one. It's not bad! Not bad at all!
It gets me through a movie or ball game without having to go out to the garage or the deck! I still take my coffee outside in the morning with my "real" ciggs, though.

It doesn't taste quite like my Marlboros, but (a) I get the nicotine, (b) I get the physical satisfaction of puffing, holding a cigg, blowing out "smoke" that dissipates harmlessly, (c) it doesn't stink at all, (d) it leaves no nasty residue and no dirty ashtray.

BTW, I got the NPRO version from NJOY ...

19. I ordered 2 e-cigarettes last night
Both are from Totally Wicked website. One is black DSE901 and another is TECC-510 Titan which is supposed to be the best. I will let you know what they're like. I tried ordering from other websites, but all of them were out of stock because Hong Kong banned exportation of e-cigarettes until I found Totally Wicked that had some in stock. Titan is coming in from UK and DSE901 coming in from Florida. Cost me a little over $200.00. Yikes!

Totally Wicked has forum http://www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk/forum/

30. Chantix gave me severe dry heaves
Sometimes I even vomited, so I developed an aversion to the medication for this reason.
I will say that I have known many who have been quite successful with Chantix...and I wish I could have been one of them.

I tried eating different things before taking the medication; sometimes it would work and other times it would not. I have a full prescription in my medicine cabinet and I wish I could say I could use it, but the thought of throwing up is too much.

I am looking at trying the e-cigs to quit.

26. What would you like to know?
I am looking forward to getting my e-cigarettes! Lots of them had sold out so I had to order from UK. But puresmoker.com is up and running and is in stock today. They're cheaper than what I ordered. I should have waited. LOL

My favorite brand of cigarettes is now 4.25 from 2.73 per pack. I am not buying them anymore. I ordered two e-cigarettes for little over $200.00, but if I had continued on smoking analogs (regular cigarettes) it would cost me $1547.00 per year! So 200.00 is better investment..all I will buy is e-liquids, carts, batteries. I plan to buy usb pass through from puresmoker.com to save on batteries...they're out of stock right now. (20.00)

Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 01:35 AM by Jeep789
It is okay but I don't like the flavors (tried regular and menthol - they also have vanilla and some others I think) and you have to pull pretty hard to get enough vapor. Going to try one of the pen style ones from this site: http://www.puresmoker.com/category_s/39.htm

his site has some excellent videos and the best prices I have seen. Also, has lots of flavors both cartridges and juice and many styles of ecigs to choose from.

Edited to add: It was great fun pulling it out at work (especially because the njoy looks just like a cig) and seeing the expressions of my co-workers. They all got a kick out of it after I explained.

32. Yes, just explained what it was and people (even non-smokers)
were intrigued by it. Njoy also came with a nice little card explaining what it was which was nice for handing to the more skeptical. If you have a cube I doubt anyone will even notice. That said, work was okay because they knew me and I could explain but the njoy looks a bit too much like a cig 4 me to be comfortable which is another I just ordered a black classic from the site I mentioned above. Also, ordered a juice sampler (I have previously only used cartridges).

The best part about it is that even if you don't quit, you are at least not getting all the junk aside from nicotine that is added to cigs. The vapor is the same used in fog machines and is supposedly not harmful.

I never smoked but I envied the way it can occupy an oral fixation. Just having something to put in my mouth that isn't food, and just vapor at that, might be an option for maintaining weight.

Time to stock up. Found this in the DU Smoking Cessation Group:

Senator seeks to halt sales of 'e-cigarettes'
By KIMBERLY HEFLING – 1 day ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — A senator is asking the government to prevent the sale of so-called "electronic cigarettes" until more is known about them.

E-cigarettes are marketed as a healthier alternative to smoking and as a way to kick the habit. They are smokeless and battery-powered, releasing a nicotine vapor into the lungs.

New Jersey Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg sent the Food and Drug Administration a letter Monday saying that the agency should ensure e-cigarettes are not sold until they've been studied more.

An FDA spokeswoman says the agency will respond directly to the senator regarding his concerns.
