The "Next Top Model" riot - a desperate grab at the brass ring -
If you've seen the news this morning, you know what happened on West 55th St. yesterday.

There was an audition for that reality show "America's Next Top Model". Thousands of hopefuls crowded onto West 55th St. in Manhattan, waiting for their big chance. Apparently a car belching exhaust went by and someone hollered "Fire" . . or someone shouted "Gun". . and some predatory pickpockets started grabbing purses. . and a stampede ensued.

The audition was canceled and people who had come for miles (one interviewee was from South Carolina, I expect there were some from farther) were left on the curb, heartbroken.

Does anyone here remember the movie "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"

Times are getting so tough that an air of desperation has begun to permeate these "instant fame" shows. The exploitation of misery is getting a little thick out there.

3. I wonder if there were riots
at those production studios? We would never have known of course. I doubt it though.. times were not as tough. in the 50's. The postwar boom was in full swing. .the safety net was intact, the unions were robust...

4. the economic aberration
Edited on Sun Mar-15-09 09:46 AM by 90-percent
the perfect storm for middle class prosperity was the American post war fifties. America had all her righteous production might and our future competitors were making tin toys out of discarded oil cans and inviting Dr. Edwards Deming over to teach them how to rebuild their industries.

The prosperity I took for granted growing up in the fifties sixties and very early seventies was THE REAL ABERRATION!

It seems like the history of working people in America was mostly wage slavery save for those glorious post war decades or three after WW2.

The rich and powerful have certainly done a great job sucking up all the money out of the system for themselves. I hope they're all accosted by the people they ruined when they go through the gate to their exclusive restricted communities. The people that create the bubbles live in a bubble.

Big is a hero of mine that deserves to be considered in such glowing terms.

he walks the walk and does what he believes in. hence no big money tobacco or alcohol sponsorships for him - he declined them!

Obama ran in to Big at a Virginia ice cream store strictly by chance last summer. Obama recognized him as the greatest drag racer of all time. I'm happy Obama recognized him (and drag racing)

Garlits ran for Congress in the nineties in central Florida and got trounced by a Dem.

Professional nitro drag racing is now 1,000 feet instead of a quarter mile after Scott Kalitta's fatal crash at Englishtown last year.

Connie lost his only son. I'm not as much of a fan as I used to be. I'm very conflicted about all the accidents and serious injuries and fatalities of the last five or ten years in professional drag racing. Scott seemed to have been a beautiful person by all measures. A tragic loss.

It's a way to get on tv but if anyone thinks they'll become a top model by appearing on this show they're deluded. Trying to get into modeling is a great way to lose a bunch of money. I know someone who took her daughter to model scouting event just convinced she was so beautiful the world was would swoon at the sight of her. She was told to get a professional portfolio together so mom spent a small fortune on it, sure her investment would pay off. Took the girl to California to casting calls, the whole thing. Told the same thing the second she walked in the room. Too short, not thin enough. This girl was about 5ft 4, maybe a size 4...Mom ended up losing about $10000 in this venture. Bottom line if you're not over 5ft 9 and a size 0, you're not going to make it in modeling. And pretty girls with modeling aspirations are a dime a dozen.
