Dumb question: how can I tell the difference between a choking child and seizures?
I'm serious here

A little background: we're all sick and coughing our brains out here.

The daughter fell on her back last night playing and suddenly stiffened up, and started making this rythmic gagging sound - whereupon she stopped after about 30 seconds crying. It looked like she was having a seizure, but it could also pass for choking. Thing is she wasn't eating anything, and she was making a sounds (and air was passing through)

At the same time, she was fully conscious. There was no "black out" or loss of consciousness.

Then this happens again this morning.

So I spend all day at the ER with the girl, freaked out. They do blood tests and x-rays and no signs of Encephalitis of Meningitis. But they say keep a watch on her. They also note her tonsils are covered in mucous and are really swollen.

But you don't fuck around with seizures - so the Doc said that if she has another fit (not sure what to call it) we take her to Oakland Children's Hospital tonight.

Fuck...holy fuck...

5. She might be having fever-related seizures.

11. Yes I've been reading up on that
And it seems most likely

Keep her fever down, and keep her from heavy activity

The activity raises her temperature

8. If air was passing through she likely was not choking.

Chances are this was a fever related seizure, not unusual.

9. they could order an EEG....sounds like you are doing everything you need to

My son had an EEG a few years ago where they put the electrodes on his head and took a look at brain activity to rule out absence seizures. (staring spells)

 for your family and your little one.

10. Don't forget to encourage her to drink water or juice
to thin the mucus and replace fluid if she has/has had a fever.
Get well quick vibes to you all.

15. people will often urinate when having a seizure
Involuntarily.

Did that happen? That's one of the first questions MDs asked when my cousin had a couple of seizures unwitnessed by family members. Was she incontinent? That was the question.

How old is she?
