Orion and Scorpius. :)

I'm such a nerd, I even added the Orion Nebula and had Betelguese colored red and Rigel colored blue. Even Antares is red. :)

13. Constellations Scorpio and Orion.
Astronomy nerd here. :D

Red spot in Scorpio is Antares, a red giant star which gets its name from being against Aries (in the southern hemisphere--below the Ecliptic (galactic equator). The Anti-Aries.

Red star in top left of Orion is Betelgeuse. Blue star in bottom right of Orion is Rigel.

Red circle with dot below Orion's belt is the Great Nebula. There are three vertical gobs (nebulae) descending from the belt which are called Orion's Sword.

Anything else ya wanna know?? :D

14. Actually Antares means "rival of Ares," which is Mars.
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 07:24 PM by Lucian
Because of the red of both Antares and Mars, people often get them confused.

Edit to add that the Orion Nebula in my tattoo is actually pink...it looks red in the picture. x(

16. Cool tats!
I like the astronomy theme!

I always worry about the phrases "spur of the moment" and "tattoo" used together though...

I actually wanted to get these two tattoos, but I didn't plan on it until today when my buddy asked me if I wanted to get them.

21. If one were to put Betelguese where our Sun is now...
Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 08:03 PM by Lucian
it would totally engulf Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Jupiter would become the new Mercury.

22. The other one is Scorpius.
Scorpius, according to legend, is the one who killed Orion. Orion and Scorpius are on opposite sides of the sky. When Orion is visible, Scorpius isn't, and vice versa.
