It's actually right in line with what you've just posted. I'm reading Susan Jacoby's The Age of American Unreason at the moment--well, not at THIS precise moment, but, well, I, er... d'oh!--and it's actually her position, not mine. I'm not sure she's right. She cites things like e-mail, IMing and Twitter as the culprits killing conversation. Not to mention that people, as a rule, don't read anymore--don't read offline, she says. She argues that before people IM'd and tweeted, they spoke in full sentences, listened to what each other had to say, and responded in kind in rational, well-spoken, literate sentences. People tend not to do that on-line, however. She may have a point. LOL. (OMG, I LOL'd!)

Half of my career is mixed-media artist. The other half is consultant specializing in stratetic corporate communications. Me, I still write letters to my dearest friends with fountain pen on beautiful Amalfi paper. My handful of longtime friends with whom I'm engaged (some, over 20-plus years) in handwritten correspondence share things they'd never dream of sharing in a forum, via an "Inernet social network," by email or even telephone. There's something lovely and endearing about the gesture of handwriting, the face-to-face of a good conversation across a table. And, really, I don't care if anyone thinks I'm living in another era. These are the the important people in my life and they're worth more than a "Tweet."

38. I used to write my twin brother 20-page letters twice a week.

Now we ping-pong single-line e-mails back and forth all day long. The benefit of the new method is we probably won't be digging through them 20 years from now only to find out what idiots we were 20 years before. But of course, the advantage of the pen-on-paper method is it captures so much more about life as it is lived.
