Desperately.

I have a friend who's sung opera profesionally, and I want to follow suit.

I've never sung opera, and prolly never will. I've never sung professionally.

But I've sun amateurlishly (?) Amateurally (?) as an amateur. I love it. I still love it although I haven't done it for eight years.

I miss singing. I want to sing again.

DESPERATELY!

I need to audition somewhere.

1. start small...

Find a local karaoke night at a bar near you. That will at least get you practice..as someone who has performed on stage a time or two, its something you want to get used to...:)

3. I have sung karaoke as a way to get over stage fright.

Last time I sang on stage was 93 - 00 with a community chorus. Whenever I had a solo, I sang karaoke to get over the state fright. I haven't though of singing karaoke for a long time, though. Good suggestion!

Church choir isn't quite the same as singing on stage, but it's singing, anyway.

4. Church choir is singing, and although I'm an atheist, I haven't ruled it out.

I can sing in a church choir in order to sing.

There's also community theater. A few years ago I almost auditioned for "Bye Bye Birdie," but life intervened. Maybe I'll yet audition for a production w/ Port Tobacco Players.

Probably a lot of choirs in the big churches in NYC have atheists, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, and so forth, so there's definitely precedent.

5. Yes, local theatre is a

good idea. Also, I have a friend who sings at wedding services. She is fabulous and could easily pass as "professional", although she has a day job. That may just be another option.

Last time I sang at a wedding, I sang at my sister's in 1981, and I cried mid-song.

That marriage broke up several years later.

Not that my singing had anything to do with it; it didn't.

I'd have to be a pro, or well-established in a church, in order to sing in a wedding now.

But I appreciate the suggestion. :)

The last time I sang in public was at my friend's son's wedding five years ago. They divorced within a year. Wasn't my fault either! I swear!

I miss it desperately. (Did a lot of the theater and guitar/mic/stool thing when I was young.) Belting it out in the car and at home when no one else is around isn't quite the same.

find a community chorus or some other group.

I haven't played in a band or orchestra for 25 years and it's killing me, and I truly know how you feel. I played bassoon and instruments were so expensive, I played whatever the school and university had. When I graduated, I put my husband-at-the-time through grad school and there was never $$ to buy one. Now, 25 years later, the prices have increased dramatically and there's still no money. I've checked in to renting, but music stores don't rent them. Oh well.
