The largest kidney stones most doctors ever get to see is the size of a golf ball.

So surgeons in Hungary were taken aback when they removed a stone the size of a coconut from a man earlier today.

Sandor Sarkadi underwent an abdominal operation in Debrecen, 150 miles east of Budapest, after doctors discovered he had a kidney stone inside him that was 17 centimetres in diameter.

7. What the hell...
I hope his doctors told him this for future use...

Some of the underlying causes of kidney stones can be treated to prevent new stones from forming. If no specific treatment exists, you may be able to stave off additional kidney stones simply by drinking more water and making a few dietary changes.

8. I'm not sure it can be properly called a kidney stone
if it was removed from his stomach.

12. Bullshit.
Kidneys are higher up in the body and to the side. The organ would rupture from carrying something that size.

14. I'm with you, plus that Xray shows the spine dead center in the picture
and if that were in the kidney the spine would be either to the left or the right of the stone, and the stone is obviously sitting square in the pelvic girdle. Also, big stones in the kidney are not smooth like that. They are called 'staghorn' stones because they take on the shape of the interior of the kidney

So here is my theory:long, long, ago, the man had a small stone that dropped into his bladder and it collected additional calcium deposits and it just grew that way which would explain the way the xray looks and the smoothness of the stone.

16. "In the bladder" was my conclusion as well
although I wonder if a bladder could hold something that large.
