So, Christmas Day we're flying out to San Francisco to surprise Mrs GoS's best friend for Christmas.
We catch the 6AM flight out of Philadelphia and have paid extra for United's Economy Plus option - $250 for 5 inches of extra leg room(which turned out to be more like 18 inches because we sat in the row directly behind first class). The seats were the narrow bulkhead ones but that was alright. Because it was a long flight I decided to take a Simply Sleep tablet so I could sleep most of the trip.
All was well until about 3 hours into the flight when the combination of Simply Sleep, altitude and slightly reduced oxygen flow caused me to faint, sitting up. This has happened to me once or twice before on long haul flights so Mrs GoS, although more than a little disturbed by the fainting, knows to get the flight attendant to fetch the oxygen bottle, bring me some orange juice and when I've recovered, get me to walk around. All was done and fifteen minutes later I was fine. The rest of the flight passed without incident.
The purser and the flight attendant were very considerate, didn't cause any fuss and took care of everything without a hiccup. So, we got their names to write a complimentary letter to United about the incident and sent it off to customer service.
Mrs GoS sent this:Hi-We were traveling on Christmas Day from Phila. to SFO. My husband
passed out. This happened previously, so I knew he needed oxygen and oj
and some care. I was very worried, fearing stroke or heart attack. *
Jeff was the steward, he was so very patient and calm and helpful!!! He
not only helped with the situation with my husband, but put me at a
comfort level as well.... Curtis (with the beard in first class) was
also helpful. Please thank these two for helping!
Here's the response we got:Dear Mrs GoS.
First, on behalf of United, I do want to extend our condolences on the
passing of your husband.
We appreciate your appreciation for the quality of service provided to
you by two of our flight stewards.
I will make sure that Mr. Jeff and Mr. Curtis will be well appreciated
by their Managers. I have forwarded your comments to their respective
Managers.
Your business is important to United, and I hope you give us an
opportunity to serve you under more pleasant circumstances.

Mrs GoS then sent this:Mr. R*****t-
My husband did not die!!
Passed out means fainted!
When contacting the managers of Jeff and Curtis, please make sure the
correct information gets to them!
Thank you,
Mrs GoS
Mr. R*****t-
I am surprised at your response.
Did you not read my letter?
It offends me that you think my husband died when he only fainted!
Please read and understand my letter.
Thank you,
Mrs GoSMr. R*****t then apologized for not reading the letter. But the whole exchange was truly bizarre.
And so, apparently I'm dead!
