Why are the beds seperated in most European hotel rooms?

Seriously, in England, France, Germany and Switzerland, our hotel rooms that were booked as a double tended to have two twin beds. In Brazil, we got a nice comfy double bed!

2. Considering the amount of nude beaches in Europe

I highly doubt that. Maybe they just expect that sex takes place somewhere *besides* the bed...:evilgrin:

5. Makes the room bookable for travel (not sexual) companions of same sex.

Push the beds together if you want to sleep next to each other.

They definitely do have rooms with double beds, I've stayed in some.

I think the others are designed for sibs, or traveling companions who may not be sexually involved.

8. I had the opposite experience

The last time I was in England, I traveled with a female friend (platonic--we're both straight). Most of the time we stayed with friends in London, but both times we traveled outside the city for the weekend, we had to turn down the room we were given (once in a hotel, once in a B&B) because there WEREN'T twin beds (and both times we had asked for twin beds). The proprietor of the B&B was really disappointed; she had saved us the nicest room. It was sweet of her--the room was gorgeous and the bed sure looked comfy--but...er, no.

9. Historically, hotel rooms in Europe have been pretty expensive...

...and, particularly in 60s and 70s, business colleagues traveling together were expected to share rooms. The trend toward single beds has persisted to this day.
