I just paid my homeowners insurance policy.
You know, some parts of this whole "own your own home" thing kinda suck.

But then, when I think of it, my house is worth* 10x what my car is, and the yearly policy premium is about the same for both.

Hm. I'm actually kind of outraged at that, now that I think about it.

*Allegedly, considering what the market is like now. :eyes:

1. Hmm.
My homeowners yearly premium (condo) is about 1/5th of my car premium. Does that make any sense? (Condo is worth about 10x car value as well.)

14. For once you and I thought the exact same thing
except I was thinking what are the chances she's going to crash her condo into a minivan full of Midlets.

4. Either you drive a Ferrari, or your driving record is questionable.
Maybe we should start calling you The Bandit.

Actually, you're in DC right? Car theft capitol of the states, used to be. That might be why.

3. Your home isn't likely to get in a collision.
Unless I'm in it. I believe you know that story?

7. I'm assuming it's because of the recent hurricanes?
I've heard alot of people are selling their homes down there b/c of the insurance.

8. they may be "selling" but who is "buying"?
it's an unfortunate reality that such a transaction takes two parties and once people see the price of homeowner's insurance, or their inability to get it at all, then who is going to buy?

i see lots of for sale signs, i don't see any sold signs

this is louisiana tho but supposedly the recession has affected us THE LEAST because of the hurricanes (because of reconstruction money and jobs coming in)

Cut that premium right in half.

11. We can work around this.

The alley will be plowed; walk down the alley and then halfway around the block to the front door... then give the secret knock and I'll let you inside!

12. Well we have MOBILE homeowners insurance...
... and literally, that is dirt cheap - $19/month.

But then my two vehicles are worth more than the mobile home is (it's 20 years old, and we don't own the land it's on - lot payment is $150/mo with water, sewage and garbage included).

However all things considered if a tree was to fall on it, we'd have about $25,000 towards a new home - either replace the structure or abandon it and buy a real house instead.

Mark.

to pay. $3500 to $4500, if they can find someone to write the policy.

eta plus another $300/$400 for flood insurance.

16. I know that they/you're getting f*d far worse than we are in my area.
Which is bullshit to me, because as far as I can recall, the insurance companies didn't exactly pay out as they should have after Katrina.

21. Oh, the grant monies given to citizens were bailout monies for
the insurance companies - the government took the heat off of them and the grants did not equal the policy limits.

Some stopped writing policies, others went to 10% hurricane deductibles.

And all of them have shown profits and not losses.

17. Yeah, but that's only cause people like you can't actually drive your houses.
If you could, you couldn't afford homeowners insurance.

:D

18. yeah, but your house is unlikely to crash into anything...

asteroids not withstanding.

All I know is that water is NOT the home-owner's friend. Some of it is always trying to get in or make it's way from where it shouldn't.
