James A. Michener's Centennial on DVD....
http://centennial-dvd.com/

The longest (26-1/2 hours), most expensive ($25 million) and most complicated (four directors, five producers, five cinematographers, almost 100 speaking parts, several hundred extras) project made for television up to that time (1978), Centennial was shown in two- and three-hour installments over a period of four months. An adaptation of James Michener's best-selling novel, it told the story of the settling of the American West by looking at the founding of the fictional town of Centennial, Colorado, from the settling of the area in the late 18th century to the present.

My Dad and I watched this back in the day and loved it...he bought the book years ago and I've just recently read it and wanted this movie for xmas...sentimental reasons mostly since my Dad passed away...but I am lovin' it all over again...sure wish he were here to watch it with me again.

Just wondered if anyone else liked this saga...in book and/or film version?

1. I remember really liking the book. Actually, I enjoyed all of the Michener
books that I read, even though it's been decades since I looked at them. Along with Centennial, the one that really stuck with me was the Middle East novel, The Source.

Although I read them as brain-candy, I've always been a bit curious as to how historically accurate Michener was - my impression was that he really did his homework...

10. Centennial and The Source were my favorite Michener books. I adore his
epic detailed stories.

I loved the miniseries, and the casting was spot on.

4. Michener is the best

authors of historical fiction. He may no longer be with us but I refuse to say he "was" the best. No one holds a candle to him. The research for each book had to be exhausting!

I've read twelve of them, I think, at last count. I think my favorites are The Source and The Covenant.

5. I was disappointed by the movie at the time because it felt like the
producers blew their budget on the opening stories and had to blast through the 20th century stories. Television habits have changed since then. I'd love to see a multi-season series of this, Chesapeake and Hawaii.

7. I can see your point...but the bonus feature states that Michener was very pleased....
....that it was very well made and didn't stray away from the book. And Robert Conrad states he wishes to be most remembered for his role in this more than any thing else he did as an actor.

8. Oh, I *LOVED* Centennial! Both the book and the movie.
I especially like the dig at the end where Nebraska is doing its annual beatup of Colorado on the football field. Hilarious.
