40. The movie opens as he walks past an old oak tree....
on the bluffs above a bridge. That is the old Fair Oaks bridge and that tree is where I (a very long time ago)and my girl, Pat first made love.

In that time that was the place everyone went to party and to do that.

We watched them take the bridge apart so they could drive the car off of it...

188. I made a friend of mine watch that movie a few years ago.
She's the type that usually can't watch a movie unless it has explosions and chase scenes, and/or never anything that was filmed before 1990.

but since she was my guest and I chose the movie, she had no choice but to sit and watch it. And she loved it!

19. I really liked "The Matador" - Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear
were great!

Not in the great category, but funny: "What Planet Are You From?" with Greg Kinnear, Ben Kingsley, Annette Bening, John Goodman, and Gary Shandling.

I also really liked "Les Invasions barbares" - It's not nearly as bleak as it sounds: "Having a difficult time accepting the reality of death and feeling regretful of his past, a man dying of cancer tries to find peace in his last moments. His estranged son, ex-wife, ex-lovers and old friends will all come to him to share his last breath."

20. The Best Intentions (1992)
Bergman's Family Story Of Life Before Ingmar

"The Best Intentions," the epic-length story of a Swedish couple's courtship and marriage, is dominated by an unborn child. The baby whose arrival is imminent as the film concludes will be Ingmar Bergman, whose screenplay looks back at the social, economic and personal forces that turned his parents' early years together into a tug of war.

All the film people mention "Citizen Kane" and "Breathless," but I think they conflated their clear influence on cinema with the actual execution of the movies, which was less than great.

253. I disagree
8 1/2 is when Fellini's films started going downhill, when he figured he didn't need to tell a story anymore, just fill the screen with quirky images.

I think How Green Was My Valley deserved the Best Picture Oscar that it got ahead of Citizen Kane, but Citizen is still a profoundly moving film. 8 1/2 is a film that relies on the context of its time and the director's oeuvre to be appreciated.

And it bored me to tears.

I have loved subtitles since I first saw Jules and Jim....

We always went to our local Film-makers screenings, even when we were in college (when it was still one floor of a tiny building - it now has a fairly large complex). Plus h was a film student. So I've seen all kinds of films, and I am grateful for those experiences.

"These characters are too complicated. ' Well, hell, those are the best kind!

Did you see Persepolis? That was amazing. I still think about how I felt when I saw it. I'm a little behind this year, there are still a lot of cool international films I haven't had a chance to see yet. We live near the Uni districts, so we usually have at least one theater screening recent international films.

Milk, Slumdog Millionaire and The Reader are on my list to see... Just saw Benjamin Button with some friends (I would rather have seen Synecdoche NY, MIlk or Slumdog, though.)

30. Crossing Delancy
1988.

Hip 30-ish Jewish woman tries to break free from family pressure to find a nice Jewish boy to settle down with. Funny and whimsical by turns, Amy Irving and Peter Riegert are great, and there are also great bit parts by Rosemary Harris and David Hyde Pierce.

Reizl Bozyk, an actress from the Yiddish theater, is great as Irving's bubbie, and so is Sylvia Miles as the matchmaker she hires.

You're right on about Reizl Bozyk--she was absolutely delightful as Bubbie. And Sylvia Miles was really hysterical as the matchmaker. I also loved Suzy Roche as Irving's dateless friend, she was great in that role and I don't understand why she hasn't acted more.

215. Great music, great chemistry.
Bozyk had great chemistry with Peter Riegert too, and of course we all know from opinionated immigrant grandmothers around here on DU.

Suzzy Roche had good comic timing and some great dialogue -- and she and her sisters contributed music to the movie as well.

32. The Best of Youth
Or in the orginal Italian - La Meglio Gioventù

Pretty much a history of contemporary Italy from the late 60's to the present through two brothers, their circle of friends and family. A six hour epic, but well worth the time. (I saw it over two nights.)

See it. You'll be tested on Friday.

53. "Layer Cake"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375912/

It stars a pre-007 Daniel Craig in a hands down impeccable performance. I have no idea why this movie didn't get more press here in the states.

Also, "Total Eclipse":

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114702/

Leonardo DiCaprio's only tolerable performance, IMO. He plays the revered french poet Arthur Rimbaud and does so brilliantly in reference to the biographies I've read about the poet himself.

Lastly, "Thirteen":

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0328538/

I don't know why this one didn't get more press but it's a great dark coming of age story about a young girl and the temptations of adulthood all around her. Kind of like "Kids" but with less emotional and violent trauma.

A complex tale of murder and cross-family intrigue...

Set in modern-day Texas.

Just looked it up...a John Sayles movie. Cast includes Kris Kristofferson, Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Pena, Matthew McConaughey.

104. I have the odd distinction (if it is distinct) of having two different cult classics filmed
just outside places I would later work, so that you can almost see my place of employment, but not quite. True Stories is one of those--the fashion show in the mall was filmed just downstairs from my store, and you can see the top of the storefront when the camera pans upwards. The other is Blood Simple, which had one scene filmed in a fake phone booth set up a few yards from my current job.

Not relevant. Just thought I'd mention it. :) I can't remember the last line of True Stories, I have to admit. :(

108. Here it is
Well, I really enjoy forgetting. When I first come to a place, I notice all the little details. I notice the way the sky looks, the color of white paper, the way people walk, doorknobs - everything. Then I get used to the place and I don't notice those things anymore. So only by forgetting can I see the place again as it really is.

I caught it twice on IFC, my wife, LOVES this movie....but during my third viewing it got me...

Same thing with Napoleon Dynamite...first time I watched it, I was drunk, and I thought it was dumb...

Second time, bleh...boring and slow

third time, I got into it, and actually watched it without distractions...and it got me

Melina Mercouri, Ellen Burstyn. Directed and written by Jules Dassin. About an expatriate Greek actress preparing to play Medea, and trying to understand the role by meeting an American woman who murdered her own children. Chilling, haunting, and the best you've never seen.

146. Wow - there really is a "Dr. Mabuse"??
I only know the name from a song by one of my favorite bands:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI7SN46qplE

Maybe they based the song on the movie, though from what I saw of the movie trailer, the themes have no relation to one another. I always took the song "Dr. Mabuse" to be about a vampire hunter of sorts. Couldn't really tell what the movie was about.

155. There are some similarities to what is sung and what the movie is about
plus some elements that show up in the video. The big 'M' seems to be referencing the movie "M" also by Fritz Lang and featuring the same Inspector Lohmann. The beginning of the video sounds like they were partially sampling the machine sounds that open the film.

Here's a synopsis from http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s1225mabu.html

A rash of perfectly-executed crimes hits Berlin. The crafty Kriminalkomissar inspector Lohmann (Otto Wernicke) thinks that the sudden madness of an ex- policeman Hofmeister (Karl Meixner) is part of it. The clue "Mabuse" keeps coming up but the few who remember that master criminal know that he's been confined to a madhouse for ten years. In reality, Mabuse (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) is concocting what he calls an "empire of crime" from his asylum cell, on reams of scribbled paper. The asylum director Doctor Baum (Oscar Beregi Sr.) is carrying out Mabuse's orders by hypnotic command, leading his criminal organization by remote control. One of Mabuse's lieutenants is Thomas Kent (Gustav Diessl), an honest man driven to crime by unemployment. The love of his girlfriend Lilli (Wera Liessem) inspires Kent to defect from Mabuse's service even though that carries the underworld kiss of death from Mabuse's internal hit squad.

I've only ever seen this movie and not the first one. Still, like many of Lang's films, it's twisted and thought-provoking :)

213. Cool - thanks for the synopsis!
It does sound like the song was inspired by the movie, then. For my own listening pleasure I'll still go with my "vampire hunter" interpretation, but the great thing about this band's lyrics is that they're often so vague you can read a lot into them according to your own preference. Neat to know some of the history behind it, though!

Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 12:52 PM by gmoney
"Rubin & Ed" features Krispin Glover from the time of his infamous Letterman appearance (I think he was in the Rubin character on the show) and Howard Hesseman as an unlikely sort of Don Quixote/Sancho Panza kind of thing. Available on DVD direct from the director! http://www.echocave.net/rubin_ed.html

"I'll be quiet. Quiet as a well-digger's ass."

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102817/

------

"How to Get Ahead in Advertising" is an amazing British film about advertising and its insidious effects on its creators. The early monologue along is worth the price of admission. Brilliant performance from Richard E. Grant, and for my money, much better and funnier than "Withnail & I"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097531/

It actually got the "Criterion Collection" treatment a few years back, so you know it's good... but maybe you've already heard of it.

127. I thought of another few.
"Stardust"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486655/

A fantasy/comedy/romance with Ian McKellen narrating, Claire Danes, and Robert Deniro as a comically emotional pirate flying ship captain. Deniro plays this role hilaiously well and you can tell he really enjoyed the part.

"Akira"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094625/

A seminal example of the potency of potential in Japanese animation released in 1988 - way beyond its time. We were nowhere near the level of intellectual imagery, complexity of storyline, and philosophical introspection this movie showed at that time.

"Spirited Away"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245429/

Another brilliant example of Japanese imagery and grasp of the imaginary fantastic in intensely detailed animation. It involves a young girl finding herself lost in a fantasy land where she must conquer many trials of character to make her way back home to her parents.

131. I bet most people have never seen these
1. Clockwise: John Cleese plays (what else?) a pompous ass of a school headmaster who becomes nationally famous for his highly regimented school. He is invited to speak at a national conference, but he takes a wrong turn in a train station and after that, his whole life falls apart in every way possible...to great hilarity. I showed this movie to a bunch of friends and they LOVED it.

2. The Fringe Dwellers: Racism in other countries is much like racism anywhere, as this Australian film shows. The Comeaway family are Aborigines living in a squatters' camp on the edge of a small town, but they get a chance to move into public housing. While the racism of the white residents is ever-present, the real focus of the film is on how different family members respond to it: by internalizing the stereotypes, by developing a chip on one's shoulder, or by trying to regain lost traditions.

3. Supermarket Woman: A little-known film by Juzo Itami, the director of Tampopo, this starts his wife Nobuko Miyamoto as a housewife who helps a struggling neighborhood grocery store compete against a national supermarket chain. Lots of slapstick and other comedy, too.

4. Peking Opera Blues: One of the funniest films ever shown at the Portland International Film Festival, this Cantonese comedy has some of the most original sight gags and slapstick I've ever seen. The plot is just an excuse for the jokes, which are intensified by the off-kilter English in the subtitles.

258. Clockwise - excellent choice - written by Michael Frayn
which is what really makes it (he's also written many books, and plays; eg 'Noises Off' - the film of which is apparently a travesty, so I haven't bothered with it, but it's probably the funniest play I've ever seen performed; or 'Copenhagen' - an excellent play/film on the possible collaboration of German scientists in a Nazi nuclear bomb program). And since I was at an British school at the time it came out, and some of the lines could have come word from word from the school - and the final scene was filmed in a doppelganger of our school hall, I've always remembered it.

With this you can find any movie, t.v. show, band, or any other other media you want to find with relatively fast download speeds. It's probably not entirely legal so I'm not saying you, myself, or anyone else should do this but it's a good thing to be aware of what you're not supposed to do.

142. Oldboy, Clean Shaven, Sorcerer, Leningrad Cowboys Go America
Oldboy: A man gets kidnapped for 15 years without ever knowing who is behind it or why. One day he suddenly gets released, is given fresh clothes, money and a cell phone...and 5 days to work it all out. Roger Ebert said in his review, "Oldboy is a powerful film not because of what it depicts, but because of the depths of the human heart which it strips bare."

Clean Shaven: Lodge Kerrigan began his succession of utterly unique, visually and aurally dazzling character studies with the raw, ravaging Clean, Shaven. A compelling headfirst dive into the mindscape of a schizophrenic (played by the remarkable Peter Greene) as he tries to track down his daughter after he is released from an institution, Kerrigan’s film brilliantly uses sound and image to lead audiences into a terrifying subjectivity. No one is left unscathed.

Sorcerer: William Friedkin's remake of the 50's movie, The Wages Of Fear. A group of outcasts from different backgrounds/nationalities are forced by misfortune to work in a remote oil drilling operation in South America. When fire breaks out of control, the outcasts are given the opportunity to earn enough money to get out by transporting two crates of unstable nitroglycerin through miles of jungle in ancient trucks. Will they succeed and regain their honor and citizenship, or get blown up for their efforts? Features one of the most intense scenes I've ever watched, as a truck tries to cross a rather treacherous bridge, as pictured on the cover. :)

Leningrad Cowboys Go America: At the beginning, the Leningrad Cowboys, a band with foot-long pompadour hairstyles, are in Siberia, where nobody likes their polka music. Due to their seemingly complete lack of talent, a move to America comes as a natural choice, as they say people will listen to "anything" there. Before they leave for America, one band member goes outside to practice and freezes. An agent in New York offers them a gig at a wedding in Mexico, and recommends that they change their musical style to rock and roll. They buy a car and set off to earn their way through the Deep South, carrying the coffin containing the frozen band member on the roof of their car. All the while they are being driven on and exploited by their manager Vladimir (Matti Pellonpää), who keeps his beer in the coffin, and pursued by the village idiot, Igor (Kari Väänänen), who tries to become a band member.

My contribution to the thread:

Black Cat White Cat - a tale of gypsy love. One of the funniest movies I've seen. My favorite line from the film: "Shut up when you are talking to me!"

Close to Eden - great movie, just great. The scene with the girl playing the accordion will blow you away!

149. Try: "West Beirut", "Journey of Hope", "The Killing", "El Norte", "DiG!" and "Miller's Crossing"
West Beirut

West Beirut is a 1998 Lebanese drama film written and directed by Ziad Doueiri.

In April, 1975, civil war breaks out; Beirut is partitioned along a Muslim-Christian line and is divided into East and West Beirut. Tarek is in high school, making Super 8 movies with his friend, Omar. At first the war is a lark: school has closed, the violence is fascinating, getting from West to East is a game. His mother wants to leave; his father refuses.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Beirut

Journey of Hope

Journey of Hope is a 1990 film directed by Xavier Koller. It tells the story of a Kurdish family from Turkey who try to illegally emigrate to Switzerland, a country they know only from a postcard. The film is a co-production between companies in Switzerland, Turkey and the UK.

The film won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film was submitted to the Academy by the Swiss government, resulting in that nation's second Oscar win.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_of_Hope_(film)

The Killing

The Killing (1956) is the second feature length film noir directed by Stanley Kubrick

Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) is a veteran criminal planning one last heist before settling down and marrying Fay (Colleen Gray). He assembles a team and masterminds a racetrack robbery that, in the end, goes very wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Killing

El Norte

El Norte (1983) is an American and British film, directed by Gregory Nava.

The drama features Zaide Silvia Gutiérrez and David Villalpando, in their first film roles, as two indigenous youths who flee Guatemala in the early 1980s due to ethnic and political persecution. They head north and travel through Mexico to the United States, arriving in Los Angeles, California, after an arduous journey.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Norte_(film)

DiG!

DiG! is a 2004 documentary film directed by Ondi Timoner, and produced by Ondi Timoner, Vasco Nunes and David Timoner. Compiled from seven years of footage, it contrasts the developing careers of the bands The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre and the bands' respective frontmen Courtney Taylor and Anton Newcombe. It won the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

Compiled from 2,000 hours of footage and narrated by Courtney Taylor, DiG! follows the underground artist Anton Newcombe, revealing him to be one of the more important (during the film, Newcombe claims to be able to play over eighty musical instruments) yet comparatively unnoticed artists of our time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DiG!

Miller's Crossing

Miller's Crossing (1990) is a film directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and starring Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, Marcia Gay Harden, and John Turturro. The plot concerns a power struggle between two rival gangs and how the protagonist (Byrne) plays both sides off each other. In 2005, Time magazine chose Miller's Crossing as one of the 100 greatest movies ever made since the inception of the periodical. Time movie critic Richard Corliss called the movie a "noir with a touch so light, the film seems to float on the breeze like the Frisbee of a fedora sailing through the forest".

Tom Reagan is the long-time advisor and confidant of Leo O'Bannon, a gangster political boss who runs his Prohibition-era city. When Leo's Italian rival Johnny Caspar announces his intentions to kill the crooked bookie Bernie Bernbaum, Leo goes against Tom's advice and extends his protection to Bernie. Bernie is the brother of Verna Bernbaum, an opportunistic gun moll who shares a longtime relationship with Leo as well as a secret affair with Tom. Leo goes to war with Johnny to appease Verna.

150. Also: "Yi Yi"" Wolf Creek: and "The Business of Fancydancing"
Yi Yi: A One and a Two (traditional Chinese: 一一; pinyin: yīyī; literally "one one") is an acclaimed Taiwanese film directed by Edward Yang about the emotional struggles of a business man and the lives of his middle class Taiwanese family in Taipei seen though three generations. The English title refers to how two Chinese characters for "one" (一) written in vertical alignment can be viewed as meaning "A One" or as a single character meaning "Two" (二).

Yi Yi is an epic story about the Jiang family seen through three different perspectives: the father NJ (Nien-Jen Wu), the son Yang-Yang (Jonathan Chang), and the daughter, Ting-Ting (Kelly Lee). The three-hour piece starts with a wedding, concludes with a funeral, and contemplates all areas of human life in-between with profound humour, beauty and poignancy. The other Taiwanese cast members include Elaine Jin as NJ's wife, Min-Min, Su-Yun Ko as NJ's former love Sherry, Hsi-Sheng Chen as Ah-Di, and Pang Chang Yu as Fatty. The film also stars Japanese comedian Issei Ogata as a Japanese software mogul, Ota.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yi_Yi_(2000_film)

Wolf Creek is a 2005 Australian horror film written, co-produced and directed by Greg McLean. It has strong themes of torture and murder. The film is based on real events as stated at the beginning of the film.

Two British tourists, Liz Hunter (Magrath) and Kristy Earl (Morassi), meet with an Australian man, Ben Mitchell (Phillips), at a party, and they decide to spend the rest of their holiday with him. The young trio plans to drive to Wolf Creek, a large crater formed by a 50,000 ton meteorite, and explore the area.

Upon returning to their car after hiking down to the crater, the group discovers that the car won't start and, unable to discover the problem, prepare themselves to sit out the night. After dark, a "Crocodile Dundee"-like character named Mick Taylor (Jarratt) comes upon them and offers to show them to his camp to repair the car...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_Creek_(film)

The Business of Fancydancing is a 2002 film written and directed by Sherman Alexie.

The film follows the tension between two Spokane men who had grown up together on the Spokane Reservation in eastern Washington state: Seymour Polatkin (Evan Adams) and Aristotle (Gene Tagaban). Seymour's internal conflict between his heritage and his lifestyle as a homosexual man are highlighted through his literary success as a famed American Indian poet. Seymour returns to the reservation for the funeral of his friend Mouse (Swil Kanim), a violinist, and Seymour's internal conflict becomes external as his acquaintances on the reservation question his motivation for writing Indian-themed poems and selling them to the mainstream public. The film examines several issues that contemporary American Indians face, including cultural assimilation (both on the reservation and in urban areas), difficult stereotypes, and substance abuse.

It's like watching Wings of Desire and there are similarities between the two. The film is about existence, redemption and how fantasy, real or not, eases life's rough turns.

It features a handful of big stars playing roles that big stars rarely play. Darryl Hannah and Anthony Edwards are almost unrecognizable. Nick Nolte and James Woods are the leads.

Vanessa Redgrave with director Kayvan Mashayekh:

A gorgeous and wonderful movie. We get so much bad news out of the Middle East. This reminds us of the great scientific achievements of Persia, and the continual war between reason and fanaticism.

1) The Great Santini

One of the best movies on life in a military family in the 60's. Robert Duvall was inspiring as Lt. Col. Wilber P. "Bull" Meacham. The opening scene with the mushroom soup was a classic. Still wonder why this film lost to Kramer vs Kramer for best picture.

2) Marty

Didn't realize Ernest Borgnine won an Oscar for this film. Not a big flashy production, but a great movie of its time.

The book is neat too, it's even weirder and more complicated, with many nested levels of narrative frame going on at any one time.

Plus, it was written by an eccentric Polish nobleman who was one of the first persons ever to fly (in a hot-air balloon), and who committed suicide with a silver bullet because he was afraid he was a werewolf.
