Check in if you live in a town with a sports team that's made losing a dynasty
Edited on Sun Dec-14-08 10:22 PM by HEyHEY
Vancouver canucks fan here... or the "CanKnuckleheads" as they're known by dedicated fans. Almost forty years and nothing but losing except two trips to the Stanley cup final. They will NEVER fucking win the cup. It's just that fucking bad.

So, when I say a losing team, I mean like HOPELESSLY will never ever win a fucking thing.

in the NBA until Mark Cuban bought them.

Both the Seattle Mariners and the Washington Nationals/Montreal Expos have also never felt the joy of ever playing in a World Series game in their existance.

47. trust me, I have not lost one bit of sleep over the Rangers, Cowboys, Mavericks or
Stars. My interest is not aroused except if one of them gets in a playoff then I sort of pay attention just so I don't feel too stupid when people are talking about it.

I used to check in on the Cowboy games to see if they were winning before I called my mother in law if I happened to need to talk to her on a game night. I learned if they were losing she wasn't much fun to be around.

I am so glad my husband isn't a sports junkie.

37. The Mavericks were great in the mid 80s.
Mark Agguire, James Donaldson, Rolando Blackmon... They lost to the Lakers in the playoffs a couple of times, and had a 55 win season at least once. For a while they were hotter than the Cowboys in Dallas.

When Dick Motta quit and John MacLeod took over, they collapsed. Some of that was MacLeod's lousy coaching, some was the age and injuries of their star players, and a lot of that was Roy Tarpley, if anyone remembers him. He had superstar talent but kept melting down off the court, getting banned for drug use and doing other boneheaded things. The Mavs kept trying to build a team around him, and he kept self-destructing. That's what started their bad gunkie of the 90s.

2. I grew up a Whalers fan...
that gives new meaning to losing.

We never won shit, traded our 2 best players away for nothing, couldn't fill an arena and finally lost the team when the city and the team couldn't close a $10,000 gap in a multi-million dollar arena deal.

And it seems they haven't made it past the first round ever since. And one time they got fucked by a dumbass umpire.

they may suck in the playoffs, but they're usually the team with the most regular season wins, or close to it.

33. That's generally because the AL West is a shitty division to begin with.
Seattle? HA!!!

Texas? They have some good pitchers but they need to work on offense.

Oakland? Gutting the entire team will either be a good thing or come back to bite 'em in the ass.

5. Cincinnati Bengals
They were an expansion team in the late 60s. Went to two Super Bowls in the 80s, but lost in both of them and haven't come close since then. They did make the playoffs a few years back, but in the first play of the first game they lost their star QB to a nasty knee injury that ended up requiring sugery, and, of course, they lost the game. This year they are 2-11-1 with 2 games left to play.

30. yup - Cincinnati
luckily I can't stand most things about football (or baseball for that matter) so I don't mind. I have nothing against the actual game, and have been known to enjoy some backyard football occasionally, but am not a sports fan at all other than the Olympics.

8. All our teams were like that until we won the World Series this year.
100 sports seasons of futility. Now our football team hasn't won the Championship in 48 years, our hockey team in 33 and our basketball team in 25. Hell, this World Series is only the second in the franchise's 126 year history. It doesn't come around too often. I can feel your pain. I still have nightmares about Nathan LaFayette hitting the crossbar late in the third period against the Rangers in game 7 of the 94 final. I wanted the Canucks to win so badly.

That's hilarious, loser cities bond! I actually won a t-shirt at a rock concert on that Nathan Lafayette question. We got screwed by the refs anyway. Ever see the riot footage? Frankly, that'll go down in history more than any cup win anyway.

It was disgusting. And despite having to play against both the refs and the Rangers, the Canucks gave them all they wanted.

Yes, I remember the riots up there. Crazy shit.

14. Actually 125. Founded in 1883.
Edited on Mon Dec-15-08 03:57 AM by MrSlayer
Came in as the "Quakers" but changed to "Philadelphians" and shortened to "Phillies" by 1890.

Yes, two rings in all that time.

The Athletics were another franchise altogether. They moved to Kansas City in the 30's or 40's and then on to Oakland.

16. Pittsburgh Pirates, who just this year tied with some other team for longest
losing-season streak ever. 16 years of misery, inflicted on a once proud team. The home of greats like Honus Wagner, Willie Stargell, and Roberto Clemente. We did, however, have a few great moments. This one will live in history:

Bill Mazeroski arriving at home plate after hitting the 1960 World Series-winning, bottom of the ninth home run against the mighty Yankees!

Hey Bunny, a baseball fan uncle-in-law (?) gave me a CD of the entire radio broadcast of 1960 Game 7. What a hoot - the World Series was much less hyped in those days, and when'd the last time a pen company could afford commercial time during a World Series?

27. To this day, on the anniversary of that game, a small group of the
faithful gather in Oakland, at the site where the outfield wall of Forbes Field used to be, and listen to the radio broadcast of that game.

I think it's pretty cool that your uncle-in-law got you that tape! Things sure have changed with the World Series. Did you know that the first ever night game of the series was played in Pittsburgh in 1971? That's the first year we beat the Orioles for the title - did it again in '79. :woohoo:

31. Atlanta Hawks
Although they have improved somewhat over the last few years, that team, when compared to the Braves, Falcons, and Thrashers, is an embarrassment for our city. The last national championship the Hawks won was back in 1958, back when they were still located in St. Louis.

Their 2004-2005 season record of 13-69 was a complete shame, one which will tarnish that team for years to come.

36. New Orleans is the answer that trumps all the others.
I grew up watching the Saints and the New Orleans Jazz before they moved to Utah. Neither ever had a winning season while I lived their, for twenty-one years.

The Saints had their first winning season in franchise history the year after I moved to Dallas, 1987. For twenty years before that, they only broke even twice. Even now, they've lost almost 60% of the games they've played. The New Orleans Jazz best season ever was 39-43.

40. When I was a little kid, my Dad was going to Tulane and we had Saints Season Tickets
They were dirt cheap back then (1969 and 1970 seasons) and the games were at the old Tulane Stadium. A big highlight though was Tom Dempsey's 63 yard field goal to beat the Detroit Lions. As we were getting ready to move back to the DC area, we heard the news that Billy Kilmer was traded to the Washington Redskins.....we thought we were doomed....

We also went to a bunch of New Orleans Buccaneers ABA games, they were a winning team, hence not destined to stay in New Orleans for long......

Their unending pattern: they start off a season well with a winning record, and then proceed to gradually and completely tank.

Washington Wizards! Another fabulous team. They fired their long-time coach, and the Redskins coach may soon follow. The same pattern of great promise and miserable delivery.
