With the weekly outrage over the remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” on the board, I thought I would approach remakes a bit differently. (I think I have seen at least three or four threads about the OP being outraged about the Day the Earth Stood Still remake)
If you could go back in time and have the power to re-do a movie completely from the beginning, which movie would you choose? I am not looking for point-by-point details, but some high level changes. Somebody grossly miscast in their role? If so, who do you replace them with?
Godfather 3? Star Wars Episodes 1, 2 or 3? Matrix 2 or 3? Ishtar? Waterworld?
I would go for Star Wars 6 – Return of the Jedi.
First, I would keep the scriptwriters and director from Empire Strikes Back.
Second, delete the Ewoks, or make them far less cutesy and more realistic. I mean, come on, they’re overcoming Imperial stormtroopers with rocks and sticks!
Third, make Han Solo the rogue he was in the first two movies. He was kind of wimpy in the third movie, and his grit, toughness and ambivalence about doing the right thing were the perfect offset to goodie-goodies Luke & Leia in the first two movies. Same with Lando. Both of them were shades of grey characters who became icons of goodliness in RotJ. They could both be redeemed and good, but still have that rakish about them!
Fouth, I think if this movie were much better, George Lucas may have moved on sooner to making episodes 1-3 and had a much higher standard to meet (so, no JarJar in Episode 1, and no Hayden Christensen), and he also would not have redone Episode 4 to make Greedo shoot first.
