Are 3 month old eggs good to eat?
I'm not really an egg eater but for some reason got a hankering to eat some scrambled eggs this morning...I rummaged around the back of my fridge and found a carton with four eggs in it but the expiration date says "Sep 22"...They should be OK, huh? I also have some month old sliced ham left over but shouldn't cooking it kill whatever germs are on it? Didn't Dr. Seuss write a book about this and he turned out OK, right?

1. Eggs are easy to tell if they're good or not.
If it stinks to high heaven, it's bad. Otherwise it's good.

3. And if you shake the egg -- if it doesn't feel like what's inside is wobbly, it's good.
Mum taught me that; and the only time I've felt the yolk get all wobbly was past the stamped expiration date. On the carton; the day they stamp expiration dates on eggs is the day the janitor is going to be making a lot of money in overtime pay...

2. test them thus
Put them in a bowl of water deep enough so that they don't rest on the bottom. If they sink completely, they're fine. If they float mid-way, take your chances (probably fine). If they float, eat cereal.

This is what I do. I disclaim any responsibility for your decision. :)

5. I think I'll go with the cereal
I just hate wasting food, especially eggs, to think those poor chicks gave up their lives for nothing! It would be nice to just buy eggs one or two at a time. I really don't eat them much...

Thanks for the advice, it is something I did not know!

7. My dear Tom Kitten!
Unless those eggs were fertilized eggs, no chicks gave up their lives...

Most eggs come straight from the hen, and have not been fertilized.

Thought you'd like to know!

Enjoy your cereal, sweetie!

10. I am such a dunce sometimes

I did not know these facts I have learned today about eggs!
To this day I can only eat them scrambled or like an omelette...I think it goes back to a childhood trauma with my Dad playing airplane with me and the forkfull not quite getting in my moth and the yolk running down my chin or something like that...

Anyways, I ate some raisin bran with sliced banana and it was good! I'm hungry no more!

17. they're fine
if you're worried, crack them outside so you can throw them away in an outside garbage can immediately if they are bad -- bad eggs have a distinct sulfur smell so you can't make a mistake

but they'll be fine

i've had eggs go bad like once in 50 years and they were probably in the fridge for a YEAR

these things are designed to sit under a hen's hot ass like, for a month, and not go bad, it's astonishing how long they stay good in a fridge
