2. You know, Ava...
I really wanted to post something cool tonight as an OP. But I couldn't think of anything, and all my files were sort of empty of anything original.

But you posted right about the same time, and I figured this was as good an opportunity as any to get something to DU that had some thought as part of it.

I remember a scholarship interview I had when I was a high-school senior. The question (from a professor I came to adore, but who at the time was just another scary university guy asking me questions) was, "If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would you choose, and why?"

I chose William Shakespeare, because he was the writer I most recently studied, and whom I could talk most fluidly about (and whom I could dangle more prepositions near). I talked my way through the answer and could tell that I impressed no one.

Later, I wondered if I could have answered the question better with a different historical person, and I tossed around several possibilities in my head. Some worked out OK, some not so much.

I received the scholarship results in the mail and failed to get the prize, but I did get a secondary scholarship from that school. I always figured it was that single answer that cost me, and it haunted my thoughts for a while.

In time, I realized that the best answer was strictly non-academic, and I would have proven myself a much better applicant if I had thought non-linearly.

At this point, twenty years down the line, my answer to the question of who, out of everyone of all time, I'd most like to have dinner with would be: "They say that, at some point in time, there is someone exactly like you who has lived somewhere in the world. I would most like to have dinner with that version of myself, because it would provide me a chance to see myself as others see me. I trust in my ability to analyze others from many perspectives, but to analyze oneself from within is extremely difficult and subject to far too much favoritism. I'd love to have the chance to judge my own character from without, just as the world can do every day."

So my answer is, to overuse a phrase, "think outside the box."

3. Pick a song your parents would relate to.
Always remember your target audience. Old geezers are going to be reading your answer and they'll relate better to it that way.

Your goal is for your application to be well received.

Good luck.

or "The Cuckoo Bird in the Pickle Tree" or some other totally silly song.

Why because you can't sing so might as well sing a crazy song as a anything.

6. For the essay, I'd pick a song that helps you establish a voice
Not something over-the-top, but something catchy and subtle that actually singable. I'd probably use the song 'Money for nothing' by Dire Straits.

8. I'm picking "Imagine" as well
The lyrics are meaningful to you, and the song itself is deathless. The ideas John Lennon wrote about are things that millions would like to see in our world in their lifetimes.

Good luck, Ava! If they don't pick you, they're NUTS...

10. Okay, then. Ava, got another song for you
"What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding", Elvis Costello

As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity.

I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
There's one thing I wanna know:
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

The lyrics are great, it's catchy, I think they'll enjoy it. ;-)

20. They're not asking what song you'd sing
They're asking how do you approach a pretty random question. The actual song you select won't count for diddly-squat, what's important is the way in which it's written and the justifications which you give.

22. if I were you, I would figure out a way to answer this
that's totally out of the box and shows how creative you are - like talking about how you would never get picked to sing in a talent show, but your video played, and what it was about. In my case, and this is completely off the top of my head, I would write about how I was working sound for the talent show (cause I do stage crew in real life - and a lot more back in high school) and how at one talent show a kid practiced and got accepted to the talent show with a monologue from Macbeth, but at actual show time he came out singing "Sweet Transvestite" from Rocky Horror, and people were either in hysterics laughing or being horrified. I would probably take that and then talk about myself some. Or something along those lines.

Basically the whole point of the college essay is to prove you can write and to put yourself apart from the rest of the pack - with points for creativity and originality (but I'm sure you know this already). Whatever you do, if you do pick a song, don't pick a song everyone knows. I promise, the reviewer will have read about a thousand essays about how "Imagine" (or any other super famous, inspirational song) is the perfect song.

Good Luck! :hi:

I brought my girl an apple
She let me hold her hand
I brought my girl an orange
We kissed beneath the band
I brought my girl bananas
She let me squeeze her tight
I'm going to bring a watermelon
To my girl tonight

I brought my girl red ribbons
She hung them in her hair
I brought my girl sequins
She stuck them here and there
I brought my girl good china
She hung it from her shelf
Tonight I'm going to bring a rope
And she can hang herself

29. Lydia the Tattooed Lady
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4zRe_wvJw8

Why? Because it's funny, melodic, archaic, in the Vaudevillian Spirit and would be a welcome respite from the self indulgent dirges that would inevitably appear in a talent show filled with College applicants........

30. Tell them you would pick the most complicated song you could still visualize mastering.
You don't want a song that you can show off your abilities to the crowd. That's for peacocks. You want a song that makes you push your limits and become a better singer, and maybe teach you more about music as you learn it. You'd want a song that many have done, so that you could hear their voices, their interpretations, before developing your own, so that you'd understand more about how the song can be interpreted, about the process of interpretation itself. That would not only make you a better singer, it would also teach you about other people, and how they learn and interpret, and that awareness of others would help you learn more about the range of possibilities in ways that just learning the song as you would sing it could not.

Why are they asking me this question and what do they want to see in me through my answer?

They don't give a darn about your musical taste I can guarantee you that. Answer what I just wrote and then go from there with your song selection is my suggestion. I agree with what another poster said in that they want to see how you choose things and document that. But good luck anyway!

who thinks of this crap? :eyes:

in my day...

in answer to your question, you are walking through a minefield, but there are a few approaches:

1) the college "fight" song. this is guaranteed to be a stupid song, but it might work on some alumni.

2) clever: since you can't sing, pick an instrumental. big potential downside: people don't like clever as much as they say they do.

3) safest choice. pick a song you really like and you really know something about. advice to writers is: write what you know.
(note: if a song you really like is by Chumbawumba or "Loving you is easy cause you're beautiful" pick something else).

Going down (what I recall of) the list:

UCLA: Doesn't narrow it down much. Anything sassy and Left Coast by a female artist will do.
