3. Tofu Turkey is yucko!
I'll have stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, yams, creamed onions, salad, rolls and pumpkin pie. I will cook a Cornish game hen for Mr.Gut and the kitteh this year though, they so enjoy it.

8. I am not vegan. Sorry.
I do use cruelty free eggs and dairy.

I found this on the web though:

Ingredients:
1 350-g box of silken firm tofu, drained
1 heaping cup of cooked or canned pumpkin
1 to 1 1/4 cups brown or golden sugar, not packed tight (read this first)
dash salt
4 teaspoons blended "pumpkin pie spice" OR:
1 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1 teaspoons nutmeg
1 pie crust
Method:
Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Blend the tofu in a food processor or with a blender until smooth and cream-like, for about four minutes. Stop the machine every once in a while to scrape large pieces of tofu down into the machine's blades. Add the cooked pumpkin and blend some more, again stopping the machine and scraping the mixture down. The result should be a light orange-colored paste with no lumps of tofu.

Put the paste into a large mixing bowl and add the sugar, salt, and spices. Mix well and spoon it into the pie crust; decorate with cheerful shapes of leftover crust, if desired. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until the crusts are dark brown (but not burned).

Serve warm or chilled, plain or topped with whipped cream or ice cream.

47. One part of me knows.
The other part is too fond of cheese. I have been vegan in the past, as was my husband. We have drifted. I will go back, but in the meantime I buy local and certified cruelty free. I do know, but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded.

I have to give up acting vegan for the day because my in-laws won't consider anything good unless it's got some eggs or some fat in it, but I can avoid the actual meat slabs. I'll have the peas and sweet potatoes :9

12. Hey do you really eat those for Thanksgiving?
Do you know how to prepare them well? I've done them according to the instructions several times, and they're never great. I normally really like Tofurkey products, so I have to believe that if I could prepare it properly, it'd be really delicious.

I mean people put a lot of effort into cooking a real turkey, but the instructions here are pretty simple. What if I actually cooked it in a bag with apples and basted it and blah blah blah. Would it be better?

Any tips would help.

David

15. I second that
The full dinner is brilliant, if only for those cranberry-potato dumplings. If not tofurky, we do lasagna, Mexican feast, or other big spread.

My vegan pumpkin pie:
a punkin, steamed or roasted and puréed
1/2 c. raw sugar or agave syrup
3 T egg replacer w/6 T water
3T WW flour
1 c (or so) soymilk
4 T blackstrap molasses
1 t salt
cinnamon
cloves
ginger
allspice

2 WW or oat pie crusts

Mix thoroughly, dump in shells, dust with more cinnamon, bake @ 350 for 30-45 min. Makes a dark, intensely squashy pie--not as firm as the eggy custard ones Mom made.

11. Yeah, pretty much
We generally do all the regular sides, just without meat products, and then I usually make Tofurkey roll thing, which isn't that good, but seems like the right thing to do.

I wish I knew how to prepare them better. I bet if I took as much care with the damned thing as most people do preparing to eat a real bird, it would end up pretty tasty.

...but the roast is not too good, IMO.

We tried it one year, now go with Marinated Tofu slices cut thinly and baked in the oven until crisp...use soy sauce or "Braggs" to marinate along with spices...mmm....

34. May I suggest Quorn products?
We call them "fake chicken" at my house, but they also do a yummy fake turkey that we've served for Thanksgiving (we have vegetarians and non- around the table).

Check out the "Turk'y Roast" on this page:
http://www.quorn.us/cmpage.aspx?pageid=461&productrangeid=1

Also REALLY love the Cranberry & Goat Cheese Chik'n Cutlet and Gruyere Chik'n Cutlet (both infused with cheese!! What more could you ask?)...and pretty much anything else on this page. :-)

54. Yes, you may
The only problem with them is that they're about the size of a big grapefruit and either one of my kids alone can eat a whole one. What we really need is the 25-pound version for people who scoff at the FDA's assertion that a serving of protein should be no larger than the size of your (computer) mouse. The holidays are all about excess, aren't they? :eyes:

38. I've never had a Tofurkey, but here's what my wife and I eat
we make vegan gravy, chick'n strips (I think they are Morningstar Farms), mashed taters, green beans, cranberry, and everything else.

It beats my former Thanksgiving ritual: take the day off, avoid my family, get wasted/stoned by 10:00 and painting all day listening to music. Hmm. Maybe it doesn't beat that after all.
