Tonight I had the police come and pick up my roommate because he is suicidal
and goes on drinking binges where he is a real jerk. I drove down the highway going to the hospital but he was being so manic and loud and touching me, (not inappropriately but causing it hard to drive) and I knew I just could not take him anymore so I pulled off the highway and said I wanted to get a waffle from Waffle Hut. When we were there I went to the bathroom and called 911
and asked if a police person could take him because driving with him was getting dangerous.

So after about 20 minutes, (mostly with me on the phone and occasionally sneaking out to find out where exactly where we were,), about 5 officers came and it was obvious to them that something was wrong with my house-mate, (I complained about another house-mate in the lounge several months ago. She moved out so I am not talking about her. This guy was renting down the street and asked if he could rent from me and I said yes.

They asked him, (as did I) if he was suicidal and he just put this head down and started to cry, (same response when I asked me at the house before he agreed to get help.
I can't believe how relived I feel. I hope he gets the help he needs. I can't handle someone binge drinking and then getting manic and loud and talking in circles and going off of tangents. I personally can't afford to lose one more marble and I was starting to lose it.

So that's just a story. If you think someone is mentally ill offer them help.
I think a lot of times people don't know how to help themselves.

1. Sorry you had to go though this...
But you did the right thing...the situation could have gotten worse...
My only brother committed suicide 15 years ago...
My sister is a therapist and even she didn't recognize the signs.
Your story touched my heart.....
Memories of my brother....he was a kind soul.

Sleep well tonight...

peace~

2. Drinking really makes depression worse. Damn.
You did what you needed to. Suicide is such an act of desperation, glad you were there to help.

5. You did the right thing.
I wish I had done the same a few months ago when a neighbor was in trouble. I didn't know him well enough to realize he was suicidal. I was one of the people he reached out to, but I didn't know the signs.

I'm not blaming myself, I'm just glad to see this post, which is a reminder of what to do and look for. Next time I am in this situation, I will ask the question, and I will get help.

RIP Rod.

And a  for you. You did good.
