2. 1) The symphony is a kind of music.
The that's why an orchestra with all the instruments needed to play a symphony is called a Symphony Orchestra. :)

2) Spedometers have little gnomes inside.

3) Feral cats have very little pride, that's why they're usually so willing to accept handouts.

4) Beer cans are a blasphemy against nature. That's why.

5) You're obviously hanging around with the wrong kind of cupcakes.

6) My work clothes.

7) Sitting at my computer

8) Just got home from work. :)

9) Because early keyboards would get stuck if you typed too fast, so they came up with a keyboard that forced people to slow down. And they haven't gotten rid of it despite the fact that it's no longer applicable.

10) I don't know. I lost them a long time ago.

7. Yes, that's true.
Once the modern electric keyboard was invented (in the form of the electric typewriter), it was no longer necessary to limit typing speed. In the 1930s, August Dvorak rearranged the keyboard, not in alphabetical order, but to maximize typing ease and speed...it did not catch on however. All major OS support both QWERTY and Dvorak arrangements and it is still possible to buy a Dvorak keyboard.

They're very cool if you don't already know how to type and have memory imprint of the QWERTY layout.

10. Alas, I was taught to type properly at an early age, using the QWERTY keyboard.
So it is ingrained the very fiber of my being.

I can also type at 90+ WPM with minimal errors, so that's handy too.

9. some answers:
1. Whats the difference between an orchestra and a symphony?

An orchestra is just any large grouping of musicians. Christian Wolff, the composer, says that it's 12 or more players, but there is no accepted definition. A "symphony" would refer to a specific work composed using symphonic form - a formal structure - a specific symphony (such as Beethoven's 5th Symphony). When symphonies became more prominent in the 18th and 19th century, the orchestra was expended by some composers for these large works, and these groups grew into the "symphonic orchestra" (what most people just call an orchestra, though there are many other types of orchestras), or "symphony orchestra".

3. Do feral cats form prides?

I've never seen it, but I have a friend who says that he's seen feral cats form and hunt in packs, which I guess is something like prides.

5. How come you never see chocolate chips in cupcakes?

I see it all the time.

6. Whatcha wearing?

socks, underpants, t-shit, blue jeans, cardigan sweater

7. Where are you?

a cold and lonely place

8. What have you done today?

Went to some stores.... bought a power supply for a synthesizer, a tv antennae that doesn't really work, and some booze.... started drinking... put together a book case... drank some more... ate some noodles... drank... lots of drinking - between all of those things were internets.

9. Why didn't they just alphabetize keyboards?

I can't remember the exact reasons. Something about what letters are used most often and in what order. I guess when typewritters were new, there were several competing systems, but qwerty won.

11. aHa! "symphonic orchestra"
That is what confused me I think. I heard the term, again, today on the radio. I can sort of see it clear now. A "blues band" is a band that plays blues. :)

Another one that makes my head spin is the different way people pronounce "Debussy."
De BYU' see
DE' byu say
And forty-eleven variations in between.

Thanks :)

12. I can't help you on that one
Even as a person who's been in music academia for over 10 years, I still don't know what the proper pronunciation of that name is. I hear all sorts from people who you'd really think would know.

16. QWERTY keyboards were designed to keep the keys from jamming.
And yes, the placement was designed to separate ones that were most likely to be used in succession like "th" in order to reduce the key jams. By the time the technology had improved enough to have other ways to address the problem the QWERTY layout had been the standard for too long for the other layouts to be competitive.

These answers will be semi silly...because that is my mood tonight.

1. Whats the difference between an orchestra and a symphony?
One is music the other is a candy bar

2. How does a car's speedometer work?
It's the speedometer gnomes that do all the work

3. Do feral cats form prides?

I think they would, just like a pack of wild dogs do.

4. Why can't you catch TV broadcast waves with beer cans?
Because children may see it.

5. How come you never see chocolate chips in cupcakes?

Not only seen but made them.

6. Whatcha wearing?

An over sized t-shirt, you?

7. Where are you?
Texas

8. What have you done today?

Today I have: painted kitchen cupboards, done laundry, dusted, swept/mopped entire house, vacuumed 3 rooms, done dishes, bathed dogs, planned next weeks menu, did a bit of sewing mending that needed done. That is all so far. I may just veg the rest of the night..I am on vacation for 1 more day.

9. Why didn't they just alphabetize keyboards?
Because people would spell things wrong

10. Where are your marbles?
I keep them in a crystal jar along side my pixie sticks and jacks

15. The answers.
1. An orchestra is a torture device conceived several hundred years ago by the Inquisition, bagpipes having been ruled inhumane. A symphony is what they play.
2. Quite well, thank you very much.
3. No. Animals of genus Felis are properly pluralized with the term arrogance.
4. You can. But because television broadcasts employ electromagnetic radiation to propagate, you must use Lite beer cans.
5. Because the Man keeps the chocolate chips down, brother.
6. A big-ass grin. I'm wearing it out, in fact.
7. Since the election, I'm over the moon, in a daze, on a roll, through the roof, and, like Change, just around the corner.
8. I've been filling out questionnaires.
9. They did. Most people just think they didn't because of that damned song.
10. I have none, but I'm expecting to own some of yours very soon, after President Obama declares the socialist state.
