Dexter fans: opinion of season so far? ( SPOILER ALERT if you haven't watched first four)
I like the direction it's going because it got back to what was best about the first season: Dexter is a fish out of water, mystified by ordinary people--but in ways most of us would be mystified too.

The one problem I had so far is that Dexter sets up his kill room in Teagan's garage, even though he knew his cop buddies would have been closing in on that location too--that violates his super anal rules and put him at unnecessary risk. I guess there was no other way for him to be caught by Jimmy Smits though.

On the positive side, I think I know where the season is going to end up, but I have no idea how it's going to get there.

Any other thoughts?

1. love, love, lux Dexter!
Mr. ld and I haven't missed an episode ever! I think its interesting about the deeper relationship with Rita and now the new baby. I also think Dexter's sister is going to end up involved in the sting operation within the department, even though she is trying to avoid it. I can't quite figure out where this 'friendship' with the Jimmy Smits character is going, but if Dexter isn't careful, and reveals too much to him, or trusts in that 'friendship' too much, it could be his undoing. I don't see that really happening, as I think he's just too smart for that.

Like you, I see Dexter putting himself at risk more this season, and that could spell trouble-

3. My guess is Jimmy Smits is a vigilante or someone who plays by his own rules--that conflict with
Dexter's.

Hence, Dexter will have to kill him.

2. I like it too, though I really do miss Doakes, who was my favorite.
His interactions with Dexter were the best.

I don't have a problem with that incident for a couple of reasons. First, if I'm remembering the correct scene, Dexter found out about the place on his own by his own means; Jimmy Smits character found out in a different way, also on his own, and didn't tell the other cops about it because he wanted to handle it himself. So Dexter did not know anybody else would be coming to the place, and the rest of the cops were not coming yet any way. Also, once Dexter learned more about his father and realized he had lied to him, he began questioning everything his father said and started trying to get past his father, thinking of himself as free from his father and now making his own rules. Though he does still follow anal rules and remembers what his father told him, he's varying things somewhat as he tries to come to terms with everything and again try to find out who he (Dexter) really is.

I also like his sister's haircut; I think it's flattering on her.

4. Doakes was fun, he was a different kind of oddball from Dexter. I thought they could have gone
farther with his character, especially when it turned out he had some kind of intel background and had probably done stuff that Dex wouldn't.

5. I miss Doakes telling Dexter 'I'm watching you'
and doing the thing with 2 fingers pointed at his own eyes then turning them onto Dexter. He was nuts, and I agree with yurbud, the writers could have taken his character farther in his interactions with Dexter-- although I'm not complaining about that last episode with him.

I read that the actor that plays Dexter and the actress that plays his sister are dating in real life ( http://www.people.com/people/news/category/0,,personsTax:MichaelCHall,00.html ) I agree, I like her hair too!

7. Prado is creepy in a way that's good for plot--he's right on the edge of creepy
You never knew someone like that who was trying just a bit too hard to be your buddy? And you couldn't quite figure out what he was up to?

Dexter is best when it treads on these real life problems from his supposed-monster perspective. I have wondered at times whether Dexter was even a sociopath and if it wasn't just Harry TELLING HIM over and over that he's a sociopath that convinced him.

I remember a TV movie with Frederick Forrest about a guy who was dropped off at a mental institution as a kid with a note that he was severely retarded, so that was how he was treated and raised. One doctor noticed some oddly non-retarded behavior, tried to actually teach him some things, and it turned out he had normal intelligence.

I wonder if there will be a moment or season like that on Dexter.

8. To tell
you the truth I've been a bit disappointed by Dexter this season, the whole pregnant girlfriend thing is getting a bit old! Anybody following the other series on HBO True Blood? I really am enjoying that series more!

9. Smits is playing a borderline personality himself
He and his brother are nuts, and from the previews, Smits wants to go into business with Dexter. I always have the sense that Smits's character is on the edge of flying into pieces over the extreme emotions he is feeling. He is supposed to be saner than his brother, but I think we are in for a treat. Or trick.

So far, a good season. So much better than a new show with a similar dark theme "True Blood".

11. Not as intense as first two seasons
Though i still think it's good. I've always thought the sister was just annoying. I watched season 2 on DVD and it got to the point that i was fast forwarding through her scenes. Season 3 is ok, seems to be getting better after seeing the fourth episode. I have a feeling it's headed toward a shark jump though with Rita being pregnant and them planning to get married.
