Steve Martin got it that year. It was TEH BEST award ceremony ever. All the comics that did time were FLAWLESS -- Tom Hanks, Lily Tomlin, Larry David was awesome, Martin Short should have just stopped that night. Michaels was good. Randy Newman, Eric Idle, Mike Nichols. Carl Reiner ("A Carl not under investigation" - Short).

There were tons of clips, too, and in especial, a great clip of Gilda Radner and Steve Martin dancing.

(darn -- looks like this has been pulled. :( )

What a night.

The D.C. audience was almost as funny. Chris Matthews was laughing so hard, ("I just found out that Washington is our nation's capitol!" -- Martin) I thought he'd swallow himself. Tom Dsshle was laughing too, not just smiling. Dorgen, Dodd, a bunch of Democrats in the audience. I noticed the Republicans looked a little puzzled and anxious.

I found a link to some of Martin's acceptance speech here:

1. There's a few seconds of them dancing at about 1:29 on this tribute to Gilda.

2. I watched that one, too.
Steve Martin was my biggest influence as a kid, without a doubt (what a shock, huh?). I used to listen to his stuff religiously, and his book, The Cruel Shoes, was one of the funniest collections of short stories this side of Woody Allen's early books.
