So, I'm re-reading "The Lord of the Rings," and I realized something...
As much as I love all of J.R.R. Tolkien's creations, I think that the Ents are pretty much the coolest things ever.

Feel free to try and disagree with me. :P

5. I'm reminded of a song...
There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the Ents.
For the hobbits want more sunlight...
Which doesn't make much sense.

Also, Sauron is pretty damn cool.

Gandalf and Sauron may be Valar, but they weren't awakened by the Elves, and they certainly weren't walking, talking trees! :P

14. Yes...ish.
"His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings."

But then a few lines later...

"...suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall..."

A very good question. Whether or not a Balrog actually has wings, it seems clear that it cannot fly with them either way.

16. seems like such a simple question
Do Balrogs have wings? It might seem a simple question, but (as so often with Tolkien's work) the more we examine it, the harder it is to answer. It's a question, too, that divides Tolkien's more avid readers into two distinct camps - those who believe in Balrog wings, and those who deny their existence.

It's also a question that generates a lot of interest: we get more e-mail on this single topic than from any other article on the site. Accordingly, we've revised and expanded this section to cover the vexed 'Balrog wing' question in a fair amount of detail. If you're a casual browser, or you're not particularly interested in Balrog wings, you'll probably find far more information here than you need! Feel free to 'bail out' whenever you feel like it - this article is really written for those with a determined interest in the debate.

17. Pfft.
No matter what the Ents did, it was never good enough the the Entwives. The Ents try to plan gardens to please the Entwives, and the Entwives only blow them off and say they know of more fruitful lands that bear more blossoms. Nothing is EVER good enough for them! :eyes:

I particularly liked their asymmetry and their truly organic appearance. It would have been easy to botch it and wind up with the evil trees from The Wizard of Oz, but IMO they really got it right.

So cease this bummer, down the freak-out,
Let caps and joints cause brains to leak out!

Even better when read by a brilliant Brit actor.

Not a dramatization but a complete unabridged reading. He does an amazing job with the character's voices and helped create melodies for the songs.

24. I do agree that the Ents are pretty darn cool...
and I thought I was the only person nuts enough to re-read books. I'm odd enough to re-read whole series' of books - LOTR, Dune, HP, etc. Happy to find others with that same love of literature. The only problem that I've found with re-reading is that it takes away time from devouring new works - but sometimes I just can't help myself!!! So many books, not nearly enough lifetimes....

30. 'Undaunted Courage' was a book
that after reading, I immediately started over and read it a second time. At over 500 pages, it's not a small book either. Best Lewis and Clark retelling, ever.

Westviking by Farley Mowat is another book that I have reread many times. Best Norse in North America retelling, ever.

Then there's Lonesome Dove. Read that one at least three times.

my "haven't-read-yet-but-now-intrigued-so-have-to-go-buy-it" list. Sheesh! ;) I also have another rule about books - the longer the better. "Undaunted Courage" meets the 500 pg minimum, so that's cool. I'm a sucker for anything that approaches 1000 pgs. :hi:
