1. My dear KitchenWitch!
Ooooh, these are great!

Noisy, too, I'll bet!

There's just something so damn compelling about jets in formation!

Thanks for sharing, sweetie!

2. It was really hard to get good shots today.
I fare much better shooting air show photos when it is overcast. The camera did not want to focus and the shutter was really lagging today.

17. Wish I could see the Mustang up close
so I could ID it. There're three or four flying with that red-yellow-checkerboard nose, and one of 'em used to live here. But without seeing the rest of the markings, I can't tell. :(

Nice shots, Kitchy.

Because of the position of the sun, it was really hard to get good shots. I have had better luck when it is overcast.

That model plane is a beauty!

I think my favorite plane is the Flying Fortress (B-17 or B-25?). Amazing that it can even fly, if one thinks about it.

27. B-17
I'm a fanatic for them, too. I've been inside three; one was "Piccadilly Lilly," the one that was in "Twelve O'Clock High" (the teevee series, not the movie). It's at the Planes of Fame museum in Chino, just up the road from you.

What amazes me about the Fort isn't that it could fly — it's less than half the size of a 747 — but that 10 guys could cram into one on missions that lasted 10 hours or more. There ain't much room to move in those suckers without a bomb load. I can't imagine it with racks of eight 500-pounders.

Then there was that bit about getting shot at...

:patriot:

Oh — you wanna see some big-assed warplanes, go to the Castle AFB Museum in Atwater, just outside Merced. They've got a B-36 and a B-52. Those suckers are HUGH.

28. One of the statics at Miramar today was a B-52
My father in law used to fly the B-52. He also used to fly a WC-130 (weather recon).

29. Sweet!
I'd love to talk with your FIL. :D

My neighbor's late husband, who was also a former co-worker's dad, was a B-36 crew member and was one of the people responsible for getting 51-13730 to the Castle Air Museum. I have an open invitation to be one of its tour helpers (like, standing at the hatch and saying, "Okay, next two") at Open Cockpit Day every July 4.

Here's a pic of it:

34. When Miramar was a Naval Air Station, they had the show in August.
Oddly, the first military tenant there was the U.S. army, beginning at Camp Kearny on January 18, 1917, but that closed in 1920. In the 1930s the Navy used it for a while as a lighter-than-air base (dirigibles). When WWII broke out, the Marines built Camp Elliott there, on the former site of Camp Kearney. My Mom was stationed at Camp Elliott for a while during WWII. There are a few original buildings from Camp Elliott still there. The Marines stayed around until 1947, when they moved to the new El Toro base in Orange County. Then Miramar became Naval Auxiliary Air Station Miramar, then later just Naval Air Station Miramar. The Navy held the annual Mirmar Air Show every August, and usually it was very hot and humid. I went to it a couple of times, for the nighttime show which was more pleasant as far as temperatures. In October 1997 the Navy moved out and the Marines moved back in again. (A 1993 decision to close El Toro and the small Tustin base in Orange County was the deciding factor). The Marines wisely changed the date of the air show to October, which typically has much more tolerable weather than August in San Diego (though it can still be very hot in October, at least it's a lot less humid). By the way, we saw the Blue Angels show in person there on Friday.

36. I did not know that.
I live about 2 miles from the former El Toro base and about 5 from the Tustin Legacy.

It was indeed wise of the Marine Corps to change the dates of the air show. We went to the air show at March ARB in May, thankfully it was a cool day, but being in the IE it could have easily been well over 100 degrees.
