I hope to hear from them today, but it might be too early. Y'see, since I know my references well (obviously), I know one of them is a Queen of Procrastination. I would hope that she'd realize how important it is to return a call looking for references, but I know her. I worked for her for four years.

About the prospective employer: Not only is it one of the best-known and most prestigious law firms in the country, but their HRC Corporate Equality Index rating is 100 -- possible 110.

I had a great interview in which I was unexpectedly bumped up the chain twice. I was there for three hours. They following day they asked for my references. That was Wednesday. I knew I wouldn't get the next call until this week. So here it is, this week. No one's even in their offices until 9:00 AM, but here I am, in an anxious sweat of anticipation.

I suggest a nudge to your reluctant reference: maybe an email "heads-up" couched in warm tones that mask it as exuberence rather than prodding the procrastinator.

9. Call them to check and make sure they were able to reach your references.

Don't be pushy--just let them know you're interested--and willing to help in case of difficulty
with connecting to the references.

My son went through a situation where he was waiting for a previous supervisor to call back a reference for a job he really, really wanted. He eventually had to get HR involved at his old job to
get the supervisor to return the call. He was having to hold off an offer from another company
at the same time.
