1. your partner is in tune to every dipshit thing you do
not much dissent, so to speak. Always sounded pretty boring to me.

2. Soul Mates are members of the same soul group
who agree before birth to "come in" to work together. A soul mate can be your best friend, sibling, lover, boss, or any number of people. Ever meet someone for the first time and right away it seems like you've known them all your life? Chances are, that's one of your soul mates.

IMO, I think the common definition of soul mate (the one perfect love out of the whole population of the earth) is too limiting.

4. Jewish perspective
From http://www.jewfaq.org/marriage.htm

According to the Talmud, Rav Yehuda taught that 40 days before a male child is conceived, a voice from heaven announces whose daughter he is going to marry, literally a match made in heaven! In Yiddish, this perfect match is called "bashert,' a word meaning fate or destiny. The word "bashert" can be used to refer to any kind of fortuitous good match, such as finding the perfect job or the perfect house, but it is usually used to refer to one's soul mate.

7. When blinded by infatuation,
it's the sensation that this is the person you've waited for all your life, and the person you've spent past lives with.

After that phase is complete, it's the person you deal with despite his leaving stinky socks rolled up all over the house, and her 10,000 bottles of goo on the bathroom sink that your electric shaver has a magnetic attraction to.

She's a bitch, he's an insensitive scumbucket, and they're together anyway.

It's like this tune:

ALICE AND RALPH
by Joel Mabus

Alice is a woman.................... Ralph is a man
Alice likes to dialogue................Ralph never can
Alice wants them both to do aerobics every night
Ralph wants to go down to the bar and watch the fight
Alice wants to go to Paris and study Art............
Ralph knows all the Three Stooges movies by heart.....
Alice wants a kid, Ralph wants a dog,
Alice does ballet, Ralph likes to clog,
Everybody knows that Alice & Ralph don't fit
Everybody knows that Alice and Ralph are a split-up waitin' to split

CHORUS: Oh, Alice and Ralph, Ralph and Alice
King and Queen in their own little palace.
Ralph and Alice, Alice and Ralph,
Pick your partner and you suit yourself

Alice is a lady...............Ralph is a guy
Alice offers options...............Ralph just tells you WHY
Alice blows off steam by going shopping at the mall
...Ralph puts his fist through the wall.
Alice loves those old movies that make her cry........
Ralph likes the ones where all the Nazis die....
Alice likes to ski, Ralph likes to skate
Alice shows up early, Ralph gets there late
Everybody knows that Alice and Ralph won't work,
Everybody knows that she is a fool and he is just a jerk.

Alice needs her sleep................Ralph has to snore
Alice tries to fascinate....................Ralph tends to bore
Alice defines her worth by accomplishing her goals
Ralph likes to work the remote control
Alice appreciates the finest of cuisine.........
Ralph prefers his weenie cooked with bean.......
Alice wants to talk, Ralph wants to read
Alice wants to stay, Ralph wants to leave
Everybody knows these two should never pair
Everybody knows except Alice and Ralph, & Alice and Ralph don't care.

11. I actually don't use that term in the traditional way.
I think there are people we meet along the paths of our life who help us to evolve and to grow in specific ways.

I have a dear friend who has been my dear friend since we were 12 year old girls, giggling over the same movie stars. In a very real way, she is a soul mate. We have helped each other through some painful and horrific moments in our lives. We always call each other on our bullshit, and do it in gentle loving ways. If we don't see each other for a few months, there's no recrimination, we just pick right up where we've left off.

Each person I've known well, many of the men with whom I've been deeply involved have brought some new level of personal growth and understanding to my life and each of those people have been soul mates for a time.

14. You too...
I've had my best friend since I was 13. We just celebrated our 20th "anniversary" back in January. She's one of my soul mates.

I tend to agree with the poster above that we choose to go through this life with a group of others...that we all have karma to work out together...that the universe sends you the people you are meant to be with and that oftentimes you "know" them the second you meet them.

15. This is an interesting site
http://www.solvedating.com/soulmatecalculator.asp

Your question intrigued me because I saw it just after I got off IM with whom I consider mine, but how the hell do I know?? I googled and this site had a few definitions.

I do like some of the responses above, I feel so sure in my bones about this person, feels like we have known each other for many lifetimes, we finish each others sentences, it's symbiotic to the MAX.

BTW: just because we were IMing doesn't mean it is an online infatuation. She is my old flame from 2 decades ago, off and on for 8 years. We have had a mostly online relationship since we rediscovered each other 2 years ago but have done lunch and a few other platonic meetings. (Shitty marital situations on both sides, but kids involved.) She is my bestest ever buddy, we always have fun and a stimulating interaction like with no one else ever. It all feels so damn pure, natural and meant to be but at the same time mystical in a way, as if greater powers have drawn us together.

Sighhhhhh, maybe it is infatuation, who knows? But it makes me smile on a daily basis!
