I used to buy another brand, Yves, until I tried Tofurky and never went back. I shop at Whole Foods already, though "regular" stores do carry it. The largest WF is a further drive for me, but they have a greater variety of flavors (including a pepper one and "cranberry and stuffing" flavor; both are tasty, too.)

The kicker is that my cat is always at my feet when I open a new package. He loves it as much as I do!

21. Mama Leone's pork chops and spaghetti

Mama Leone had a NYC Italian restaurant; it still is open even though she's gone.

Pour some olive oil and butter in a big saute pan, add some sliced garlic and rosemary and cook for a minute to allow the rosemary and garlic to flavor the oils.

Brown pork chops or steaks in the pan.

Into the pan, pour a can of tomatoes. Throw in a big handful of parsley. Saute on low-medium until meat is extremely tender -- a couple of hours.

Cook some pasta and drain. Remove chops from fry pan. Pour the pan juices tomatoes etc. over the hot pasta. Add more butter to melt, and a cup or more of grated parm cheese. Toss all that til pasta is coated.

Pour the pasta on a platter or large bowl, arrange chops on top.

Eat with salad and crusty bread.

It's easy, smells fabulous, and even better the second day.

With four chops, the amounts would be something like this:

1/4 butter, 1/4 cup EVOO in the saute pan. A 15 1/2 oz can of tomatoes. Then another 1/4 cup butter when you toss the hot pasta.

More chops? Add more butter and EVOO when browning. Use a 32 oz can of tomatoes.

One thing I might note. It is not easy to actually get the chops nicely brown without scorching the garlic bits. I'd rather have just barely browned than have scorched garlic. I've used the trick of sprinkling a bit of paprika on the chops to give them a little color. Since you saute the meat in the same pan it was browned in, you'll get that savory flavor anyway.

We're having a "bruscetta" of sorts: homemade french bread with homegrown tomatoes, basil, asparagus with goat cheese and balsamic vinegar with a side of corn on the cob picked fresh today at the local farm. Finally, we're splitting a turkey thigh slow roasted with salt, pepper and dill and a nice, chilled Sauvignon Blanc to wash it all down. I love this time of year when everything is fresh from the garden.

Now for the stupid question, what's Sriracha? (Oh sure, I could google it and sound cool but that would end the conversation. )

So, similar to bananas, the texture depends on how ripe they are. You can also kind of smush them down, if you've got them cut into round bits, and that changes the texture. As for taste, it's somewhere between a banana and a potato or yam. I don't do the best job with cooking them, but I think I do ok - the first time I had them, some Ecuadorean girls made them along with a garlic/cheese sauce, and it was the best food I've ever had.

The recipe I used involved pressure cooking the dahl with garlic, onions, turmeric, then adding butter & cumin AFTER cooking and before blending with a stick blender. But when we used to make it I remember that the cumin had to be cooked in oil first. I thought that the dahl was added to that to boil up, but I think I remember the sequence wrong. Anyway, what I made was okay but needed some depth of flavor. From now on I am going to liquefy the cumin in oil first, along with some chilis before adding it to the dahl. One recipe I found described frying up cumin seeds & garlic with oil as chunkaying (I don't know whether that's a noun or a verb)

I found a tons of great recipes on this site, including one that uses coconut milk & peppers with the dahl. That sounds very much like the soup that a little sandwich shop near here used to make before they decided to go with standard North American prepared from powder soups. I miss that too

Anyway, I'm pretty excited by this site and all the new options. What I'm looking forward to next is making my own paratha, or maybe dahl puri. Actually dahl puri I can buy in my local market (lots of little ethnic stores). But we used to make paratha which we called roti...recipe came from a friend's Trinidadian mother.
