So much for fucking "confidentiality." Recent job news-related.
Many of you have read that my boss has drop-kicked me and I am being reassigned to floater. It's better than being fired, but only just.

The only way me being switched to floater will work is if one of the existing floaters agrees to take this spot. So one of them did. Her name is Enid.

Doris, the HR manager, told me the whole arrangement would be kept in strict confidence until all the details were nailed down, such as my other attorneys agreeing to the change, the exact date of the transition, etc.

I ran into Enid this morning in the break room and – well, so the hell much for confidentiality.
Enid just bowls right into me, with other people there in the kitchen, talking about this switch we’re making, discussing little, insignificant details designed only to spill the whole thing to everyone else within earshot. Apparently this – this – this PERSON has no respect for me whatsoever.

But that’s not the best part. She said she had RECONSIDERED, after so many people told her “don’t do it! Don’t work for him!” (I'm thinking, "how do all these people KNOW, Enid?" See, there’s that confidentiality again.) But she decided that since she had said she’s going to make the change, she will go on and do it.

This brought on this week’s third or fourth anxiety attack. I had to weigh my choices: run for MLH* or throw her out the window. I knew the glass would be too tough, so I chose the former.

WTF kind of person does this? WTF kind of person says, “y’know, I know I shouldn’t be doing this, I know I’ll regret it, but I AM going to save your ass. You’d better be thankful.”

I’m humiliated enough already. But I really needed to hear her say this. In front of others. Oh, yes. I needed it.

In confidence.

1. This Enid sounds like a climber...
and quite possibly, someone prone to diarrhea of the mouth!

Maybe her inability to be discreet will get her into trouble with the attorney she will be working for!

It's always fun to see someone get hoisted by their own petard!

5. She obviously wants the job, but wants you to think...
Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 07:15 PM by Kutjara
...she doesn't and is only doing it to help you out. Of course, you'll now "owe her".

Does it say "Manipulative Bitch" on her business card or is the job title just implied?

remind "Enid" that the fingers she steps upon on the way up the ladder are attached to the asses she's going to kiss on the way down. What a twit.

7. Bad Enid! No latte!
If it's any consolation, just yards from this keyboard earlier, someone chewed out a part-time guy for sneezing. "If you can't take care of your hygiene..." :grr:

And here I was thinking MLH was "Mistress of Little Haircritters". You'd've been perfect...

9. Law firms are terrible places to work
I'm an attorney.
Your place sounds pretty typical. Law firms are very hierarchical. First, there's lawyers and then there's "staff." Everyone not an attorney is put in that category and all lawyers know they rank above all staff. Then lawyers distinguish among themselves. There are partners or principals and then there's others. Others include junior associates (lowest), senior associates, and "of counsel." That last group is a strange hybrid.
I could go on but the point is that everyone is continually trying to one-up others. It's the nature of the beast.
I wish you luck, Bertha, and hope you find employment outside of a traditional law firm.

10. It's really bad when you're in a job that sucks
I had to make some decisions, recently, to improve my job situation.

The way I see it, for all the hours we spend in our jobs, we better at least be able to tolerate them (the jobs).

People have probably already suggested this, and I know the economy is terrible right now, but have you looked around for other employment?

I hope things improve for you soon.

13. I got one for you: I had my job and salary posted on the web
Our local newspaper decided to compile a database that allowed people to look up public employees by name and see what their salary is:

http://www.twincities.com/pay

Yes, it is public information, but it's still pubic information that most people have to request and compile on their own.

Let's just say it created quite a stir around my office when this came out.

17. I've been thinking about this
it's a law firm isn't it? I'm a little taken aback that a law firm would be so careless with confidentiality. Sounds to me like this Enid is a big liability for the law firm and I'd personally be tempted to mention that to the HR manager. Either way, the entire place sounds like it's unprofessional so hopefully you can hang in there long enough to find something new and then get the hell out of that icky situation.
