16. Her costumes were so risqué that I was kind of ashamed of it all.
Sometimes you could almost see up her butt. I think she toned it down a little for the Olympics, because she knew the whole world was watching. But she used everything she could to cast a spell on the judges and ended up with the gold medal in 84 Sarajevo and 88 Calgary. There were some grumblings at the time that her programs were mostly showmanship, while other skaters did more technically difficult programs. Competed in 94 Lillehammer but did not medal.

19. I liked Katarina. Then again, I also liked Tonya.
I decided to celebrate the Summer Olympics by watching old videos of figure skaters.

Tonya had her act together up until 92, and she was truly a good skater. I think she was actually starting to lose it in 91, when she hit her "peak" with the triple axel. But have you seen her 1986 and 1988 performances? Maybe she wasn't so athletic, and the hair absolutely sucked, but she was GOOD. I do think part of the reason that her artistry marks were so low in her later years was the music she chose -- it's kind of hard to be artsy when disco music is playing. But she didn't know when to let it go and let the spotlight go to younger skaters.

As far as beauty and grace, my favorite skater by far is Lu Chen. When she won her last medal in the Olympics, that bronze was gold as far as she was concerned, it appeared -- I actually think she was happier, in her own way, about that medal than Tara was with her Gold that year.

For athletics and attitude, I like Surya Bonaly. Her backflip and finishing away from the judges was clearer than a middle finger.

The skater I feel the most sorry for as far as her medals versus her talent is Michelle Kwan. You could see it in her eyes -- she didn't exactly resent Tara winning the gold that year, and she wasn't going to try to steal her spotlight, but she was oh so very disappointed.

21. Peggy Fleming said that Michelle was
the greatest female skater ever. I am inclined to agree, She was certainly better longer than any other woman skater.

22. I liked Tonya too
in fact I once wrote her a fan letter, and she or someone working for her sent me an autographed photo of her. I am sure I still have it somewhere. She peaked in 1991 as you know - maybe if she had quit while she was ahead, her life would be better today. I also liked Surya Bonaly a lot and the fact that she did a back flip in the exhibition programs after the competition was over. Her mother creeped me out though. Michelle Kwan is defitely one of the great skaters, it's too bad she never won the Olympics. I think Tara Lipinski and her entourage were just in it to get the gold and cash in on it...
