Who will be considered the "big" bands of today in 30 years?
Hendrix, Floyd, CSNY, and The Beatles all have their place in history as largely successful bands of the 60's-70's. Even though I am a teen and do enjoy most of the music out there, it seems that no one is as distinguished as the previous bands were. I'm curious who you think will go down as this generation's greatest bands.

1. I think Metallica would be considered.
Sadly, so will Kiss. Probably also AC/DC. Their longevity from the 70's through today will probably establish that. I can't think of anyone getting serious radioplay today will be in the running. I mean, seriously...Nickelback is like the Gold Standard for airplay right now.

2. I can think of a few but there's been so much crap the last couple of decades.
From the 90's - Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Tool, and Radiohead will definitely be inducted into the HOF.

3. REM
U2
Nirvana (as much for their influence as their actual body of work)
Possibly Radiohead

4. Dave Matthews, Phish, Widespread Panic, Radiohead, U2,
are all huge at the moment or have been lately or will be again (Phish). I also think that Jackie Greene will be one of the biggest solo artist really soon. His playing with Phil Lesh and Friends has brought him so many new fans....

5. I'll second what flvegan said about bands getting radioplay right now.

None of them will be big, as they mostly suck.

The thing is, the way music is experienced is a lot different from the '60s and '70s as well. Stylistically things are so fractured and music is more readily available so everything fits its own niche and I think it's unlikely that anything will sweep the world the way the Beatles did.

But one band that will be regarded in that kind of light is definitely Radiohead.

Most of the truly great bands will fall by the wayside the way most really compelling bands do. (Save for music nerds like me.)

I'm glad society is going to end.

(Before you say it, 'Madonna' was already put into the hall of fame and she's not a rock and roll band. Just a pop singer. Therefore, the rest of them qualify too.)
