This is important, people!

1. Mail: reason 8,672 the inside of my car looks like a landfill.
And I could swear I just cleaned the damned thing, too.

2. My dear flvegan!
I take it inside, and read and sort it there!

And would you please tell me, kind sir, just why this is important?

Inquiring minds, and all that!

:hi:

3. Two reasons that it's important
1. I've watched my neighbors a few times. One walks to the mailbox and reads everything there. One pulls up in a minivan and sits there for 5 minutes reading everything. I want to know if I live amongst crazy folks.

2. Since this will be a scientific poll of epic proportions, I'm going to use the results in my future GD endeavors.

Thanks for voting, Peg. And as always, please pick up your affirmed punched paper ballot on your way out. No Diebold in my vote tallies!

5. I do still get some mail,
but I do so love the ubiquitous 'paperless' option available these days. Even the grocery stores I most often shop at send me e-mail circulars on sales every Wednesday. I'd prefer it if all of my correspondence could come in that way, but I understand, society isn't quite there yet.

For the mail I do get, I bring it into my home where immediately inside the door is a shredder that empties into a mixed paper recycle bin. Everything appropriate to the shredder is shredded and recycled. **

Everything else gets put into one of three 'inbox' style bins on my desk: "To Read, To Do, To Pay." Unless its radioactively urgent, I deal with the boxes on Sunday night while I'm cooking, paying my bills, balancing my chequebook, ironing and sorting my laundry.

** If my cat is sleeping and hasn't already come to the door, the sound of the shredder causes him to come running out looking for scratchies.

Alrighty then; your knowledge of my mail gathering procedures is relatively complete. Please advise me of any expose you're planning to write when you've lined up a publisher.

6. Other
I open it standing over the recycle bin, and only take inside what won't be recycled.

7. Because I don't have anything resembling a life, detailed report.
Our mail box is 125 feet from back door, so depending upon the weather --

Nice day: Walk to the box, checking on level of water in the bird bath, yell at yelling house birds, check petunias if any need dead heading, get mail, do first sort of junk/keepers on way back to mud room where the recycling bins are kept.

Raining: Walk as fast as I can, reminding self it's only water. Sort in mud room.

Snow/cold/blizzard: Remind self to walk like a penguin, a hyperactive penguin. Sort in kitchen.

First or second sort: Junk in paper bin. Sort out Hubster's mail, throw on kitchen table. Take mine to computer/work desk. Bills on to-do pile, interesting catalogs to read later pile. Netflix DVDs, Hubster's on kitchen table; mine: arrange in viewing order, make a cuppa, a snack, threaten birds with violence if they start any stuff for next couple of hours, fire up the DVD equipment, give housework an IOU, check DU and Table Talk one more time and watch some movies.

8. You didn't have THIS choice:
I get my mail by driving by the box, AND my car is NOT a mess!

:hi:

10. mine is a combo of three
Edited on Sat Aug-02-08 06:19 PM by Kali
drive to the PO (7 or 8 miles) and my vehicle is a mess, also I sort the junk into their trash can, but nobody else who gets the mail around here ever does so it also gets sorted here and fills many waste baskets per month

Edit: oh and there is almost no recycling in this county (pretty rural) so I burn paper trash, compost/feed "organic" trash, save cans for eventual donation to next town's fire dept 4th of July fireworks fund, glass used to go to a designated "future" glass mining site but it seems to be lately going in the trash we haul 15 miles to a collection point with the plastic and other non burnables once every two or three weeks or so.
