what would you consider yourself religion-wise?
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 09:54 PM by Ava
that's always been a difficult question for me to answer. i believe in god and jesus christ(and more importantly the message he taught). however i have serious problems with the christian "faith", or to pin point it a little more, the christian church. i have yet to find a church that i feel as thoough i belong to or that meshes with my beliefs, and i often find myself cringing in church at the message from the pulpit.

i don't believe in a hell.. love, compassion and forgiveness were often themes in christ's sermons. the loving god i believe in doesn't "banish" people. i don't take everything in the bible literally, and many things out of it i don't choose to believe at all - after all neither god nor jesus wrote the bible, people did and the church decided what to include and what to exclude. i believe that people are born having the feelings towards people of the same or opposite sex that they have, and more importantly i don't think it matters even if they weren't born that way. who are we to tell people what they should and should not do in their personal lives? "judge not, that ye be not judged."

i'm also pro-choice, and of course when i utter the words "pro-choice" around most religious people i'm immediately seen as in need of being saved. apparently i'm going in hell for supporting a woman's right to do with her body what she chooses to do.

if i had to categorize my religious beliefs i would call myself a christian, because the message of christ is something i try to live by - admittedly unsuccessfully at times. however as someone who doesn't believe in a hell, and who believes that people of all faiths(or none) are equal in god's eyes and connected through something i don't understand, i would also consider myself having unitarian views.

anyways, boring and long post short - take this neat quiz and see what you come up with. do you think it pin points your religious views accurately?

Which is why the IRD ("Institute on Religion and Democracy" -- far-right think-tank/PAC) is waging a major campaign against it.

ON EDIT: That was supposed to be a reply to the O.P.

4. I'm unreligious.
I don't believe in God. I used to call that atheist, but that's such a broad term, and there are some who use it like a religion itself. They never miss a chance to post that God is make believe, or that religion is evil, or something that indicates they feel they are in competition with other people's beliefs. I used to feel that way, I guess.

But now I just see religion as a club I don't belong to. It's interesting, and it's such a strong part of so many people's lives that I study it, sort of. But I don't feel any part of it. I don't believe in any gods, and don't feel any doubt about that, but I don't get upset at others who do. I judge people individually, not by what group they belong to, and I blame people for their crimes or sins individually, without blaming the group. And I don't care what others believe, really. Belief in God, no belief in God... it's like watching a discussion I'm not a part of.

8. I have extremely strong religious/spiritual considerations
which in and of themselves do not cause me to choose to follow them...you can't get ripped by reading about weight-lifting...action is the hardest part, in my opinion.

"the loving god i believe in doesn't "banish" people."...I agree.

Belief in humans can be arbitrary. You can believe something that is not true, and act upon that for an entire lifetime. Human judgement is also telling; a text I read last night says that "unforgiveness" is the quickest path to separation from God's presence, that forgiveness is the path out of this "3rd dimension", and that the "4th dimension" is of love and service, which obviously are not possible with judgement...which is of the mind, not the heart. The path out of judgement is of the heart.

The AA literature says early on that, paraphrasing, we were rocketed into a 4th dimension of which we had not even suspected, based upon the love and service involved in program. The 3rd Tradition negates judgement and expulsion, opting to forgive any who need program, based upon the good they can do for others, and how that good branches out to others and others. Who are we to deny that?

Buddhism states that grasping and hate are two of the main poisons which must be overcome. In AA it is plainly stated that resentment is the number one offender, which has the power of life and death over us. It is grasping, which is dismantled through the tools of examination and forgiveness.

I for one would never forgive that which I judge, except that it is a life-threatening condition. It's a good motivator, and thankfully, the tools as described truly function as described. Kaballah states that the Universal elements of Judgement and Compassion are interconnected, and that one without the other is dangerous (at least judgement without compassion...I'm a rote beginner at Kaballah and am only attempting to parrot what I've recently skimmed over...)

Page 57 of the AA Big Book states: "What is this but a miracle of healing? Yet its elements are simple. Circumstances made him willing to believe. He humbly offered himself to his Maker- then he knew.

...

When we drew near to Him He revealed Himself to us!"

The Bible states that only the pure of heart may see God. I for one would like to know more about that last sentence above...

I believe in Christ and the power he presented (all of you can do as I have done...faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains) and especially regarding the social engineering he presented (which is astonishingly difficult in this world, but our increasingly negative context does not diminish it but reinforces its imperative), but I don't know about his divinity. Many Indian mystics have similar power.

I do know that the spiritual path is filled with pitfalls and predators (of a nature and dimension you would not wish to learn). Learning to respond with love appears to be the best method in our world. Skills and powers distract from love.

59. okay I did it now
But some of the questions didn't have my answer listed for me to pick. Like #7, there's so much suffering because people are horrible dumb animals. 40,000 people, mostly children, starve to DEATH every day but most of us don't care as long as we can put gas in our cars  So 'humanist' makes it sound like I have some feeling for my species when I know in my heart we're gonna choke the world, we're not gonna slow down the extinction we started until we've killed off about 2/3 of our own species.

13. I'm a Christian. I believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the one who
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 10:26 PM by mycritters2
ushers in compassion. But I don't see it as what too often seems to me the squishy, feel good message of progressive Christians. Jesus looks evil in the face, confronts violence and says "No more!". This is a more active confrontation with violence than most progressive Christians mean. I think the message of Jesus was not just one of compassion, but of active non-violence, of challenging a world that says that sometimes you just have to behave violently.

My faith is best described in the works of Rene Girard. When I began reading Girard a couple of years ago, it was like someone was FINALLY stating the Christian faith as I found it in scripture and the tradition.

I suppose I'm a Girardian Christian.

As to the quiz you posted, it'll get my faith wrong, I'm sure. Because I use traditional language to describe my faith--because no better language has yet been arrived at--it'll make me a more traditional Christian than I am. In spite of my traditional language, I am a strict pacifist, and believe pacifism should be at the very heart of the Christian faith. Indeed, it's hard for me to stay in my own church these days, because of its constant waffling on issues of peace and violence. If I were a lay person--which would make switching easier--I'd become Mennonite or Brethren. But I do feel called to ministry, so changing denominations becomes complicated. I work to move the UCC closer to the pacifism which I find at the heart of the teachings of Jesus.

So, I'm not a traditional Christian, because Christianity lacks a commitment to a non-violent message that I think is necessary. But my theology is too theistic for most Quakers.

I don't fit easily in any category.

20. I'm no "new-ager".
I believe in science and the type of morality that benefits all of mankind. There's no evidence of an invisible sky wizard, or a gestalt, or a common oversoul, or whatever else you want to call it. I think that believing that I share some common bond with 1/12th of the population, based upon my birthdate, is idiotic.

We are what we make of ourselves. That's not "new age" bullshit, that's common sense.

Now pardon me while I rub some crystals and align my chakras (or whatever the woo-woos call it).

30. recovering Baptist
Grew up in a church that worshipped Reagan as much as it did Christ. Never bought into all of the doctrine, but I've pretty much given up on organized religion. Still try to live by the teachings of Christ. Some days I do better than others.

Never really felt the "Spirit" or the "Presence of God" or whatever you want to call it in a church building, as much as I have in nature, be it up in the mountains, or at the beach or whatever. And that led me to Native American spirituality.

So kind of a hybrid of those two, I guess. And some days in the last few years, I've pretty much questioned everything, but I do so with the knowledge that I've seen plenty of things that defy any "logical" explanation, so I would never make the jump to atheism (no offense to anyone who has)

So whatever label you want to attach to all of that, I guess.

I spent some time looking for something relatively non-offensive, but then I realized that I didn't believe in any of it For me trying to find the least offensive thing to not believe in was a waste of my time and effort, and so I accepted the fact that I'm simply not inclined to believe much of anything without evidence.

39. Interesting
I think I've probably believed in each of my top ten at some point or another in my life. Not so sure about the "Christian" part though: I think Jesus had some really good ideas, but I'm not convinced he was the only Messiah. Right now I'm numbers two and seven. Wouldn't be surprised if that changed, though.

About being a Buddhist, Humanist or UU atheist. It's about making the world a better place, not getting about getting to heaven.

(Of course, you just know I'm gonna favor my own religion!)

"Have you been saved by the Ethical Principles?"

Edited to add: Unitarian Jihad is always looking for more recruits. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/04/08/DDG27BCFLG1.DTL

51. None (NOT Nun!)
Attended religious school K-12, against my will. Took several college courses on religions, don't believe most of it.

I have no doubt there is something going on that we are not aware of, but IMO, religion and tstandard concepts of god are creations of the limited thought processes of us all over the years.

In other words, we believe our own bullshit, and kill others because they believe their own version. Sounds human to me, alright.

69. that was interesting. I came out Liberal Quaker, UU and Mainline to Liberal

What this really illustrates is the universality of faith however one proclaims it. Boy could discussion rage from this if a group of friends took it together, then sat around and talked about it preferably with some sacramental wine and bread LOL

81. Update. It said I was a UU when I took it two years ago. I just took it again.
Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 04:51 PM by Herdin_Cats
I took it again just now and it said that I'm a Mahayana Buddhist. That's the correct diagnosis.

My previous post referred to when I took the test about two years ago, when I was just starting to delve into Buddhism. So I guess my religious thinking has become more Buddhist since I last took the test. It makes sense that it would. It's interesting to see how much my thinking has changed in just two years. I'm glad I took it again.

93. I have a question...
since you self-identified as a Mahayana Buddhist I'm assuming you know the answer. It's admittedly just intellectual curiosity (as a political scientist/humanities nerd I tend to have a lot of those) but I figure I'm not the only one who while reading this thread wondered about this.

What exactly is the difference between Mahayana Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism?

I looked at the BeliefNet descriptions and they are word-for-word exactly the same. I ran a Google search and the answers that I got back were that it was a regional/national difference and a lot of pages trying to explain but were littered with a lot of outsider-unfriendly terminology that I could spend weeks looking up (Pali Canon, Tripitaka, Arhat, sangha, Parittas, Bardo, kaya, Maitreya,...) with no promise of understanding the difference any better than I do now.

I'm assuming that there is a lot more to it than North-Asian (i.e. Tibetan) Buddhists are Mahayana, Southern (i.e. Laotian) Buddhists are Theravada, and Indian Buddhists might be either/neither. Is it a major schism or more like the different "flavors" of mainline Protestantism where there is no great divide, just a lot of small differences of opinion?

99. It's kind of complicated.
And I'm no expert, especially about Theravada. Theravada is based on the Pali canon, the earliest surviving written Buddhist works. Mahayana includes various other sutras that were written later.

The main difference is that Mahayana focuses on the bodhisattva ideal, which means that practitioners vow to work throughout all their lifetimes to free all sentient beings from suffering, putting off Nirvana until all beings become enlightened. One who does that is called a bodhisattva. Mahayana includes Zen, Pure Land, and Tibetan Buddhism.

In Theravada, each individual works for their own enlightenment, and maintains compassion for all sentient beings, but doesn't put off their own attainment of Nirvana in order to help others get there.

I hope that makes some sense. I'm still a beginner. I sort of pick up the dharma for a while and then put it down again when I get frustrated. So my progress is slow and my knowledge is limited.

Here's a website with more information:

That's it. Otherwise I never think about religion at all, other than to fight instinct to put down anyone who tries to force religion into a conversation or situation. The nightly prayer is mostly an excuse to get to sleep without thinking I forgot something.

Plus, it somehow worked when I was a kid, praying for the Miami Dolphins to "win every game next season." That was prior to 1972. :)

85. "Moderately Progressive Catholic"
No big surprises here...

You Are an Ignatian Exercises (Moderately Progressive) Catholic
You love the church, but you'd like to see some changes in certain areas--birth control, divorce, the role of women--where official teaching seems disconnected from contemporary experience. You find the new vernacular liturgy, forms of prayer (such as adapting the age-old Ignatian Exercises for the laity), and devotions that arose in the wake of the Second Vatican Council much more relevant to your own spirituality than the old. Your favorite hymn is probably a contemporary standard such as "On Eagle's Wings." It goes without saying that your favorite pope is John XXIII, the pope of Vatican II. You admire examples of sanctity that seem relevant to our time, such as Dorothy Day. You loved the movie "The Mission," because it reflected a Christian concern for the marginalized that was squelched by the institutional church.

Don't be afraid to ask, and seek answers to, the questions that may be in the back of your mind but you're afraid to ask. Listen to everyone, and use your critical thinking skills to evaluate the claims.

Most importantly, ask yourself "Why do I believe what I believe?" Be honest with yourself about the answer, and work from there.
