What was your first date with your current squeeze/lifemate?
There's a "Mummy" thread going around right now, and it made me think of the first date I had with my spouse. We went to see "The Mummy Returns" at the drive-in. Godawful movie, but Brendan Fraser brought us together. We married two years later.

1. Oktoberain and i had already been living together for a couple of months
before we had our first official 'date'. Just the two of us, out for dinner at this cute little 50's retro soda fountain/burger joint where the cook still wore one of those white paper hats. The food was goof, and conversation was better, and the walk home was like a dream.

2. Ours was strange.
We had an entire week full of first dates since we were an internet relationship. We wrote for 3 months before reprehensor flew down from Canada.

So technically our first date was picking up from the airport, going back to my place, getting busy, driving to Austin, meeting my mom, out to dinner with my mom, going over to friends' afterward for drinks, going to the Austin record convention, seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan statue, eating at Chuy's, back to Dallas, going to the Kimbell art museum, lunch out at Uncle Julio's, lunch out with friends, beers at the Flying Saucer... I forget the other stuff!

The whole trip was a beautiful blur. :D

4. OK you asked for it: He lived in Illinois, I lived in Nashville. We had been good
friends for years and I was (finally) divorced. So one weekend when we were at Mammoth Cave for an exploration weekend we decided to have a date. He came down to Nashville, and we went to an Improv Theater and dinner with another couple we caved with, then spent a day touring a museum in town, then Sunday we went up to Mammoth and did some ridgewalking with our friends. It was a three day date and it was exhausting.

Despite my intentions to never do so again we were married a year later. Still married after 26 years of togetherness and 5 years of friendship prior to that. Oh yeah and a daughter, now 23.

5. My first official date
Was going up to Toronto to meet, for the first time, this guy I met online named Doug. We had talked online and on the phone, but this was the first face to face meeting. I took the train up there and when I got off at Union Station, I saw this handsome guy (I knew what he looked like, since we exchanged pics, but I was still very pleasantly surprised at how handsome he was in person) holding up a cardboard sign with the name "Terry" on it. I broke out in a big grin and went home with him, knowing that I wanted to have him in my life forever.

7. We knew each other for about a year beforehand....
Things got out of control at a New Year's Eve party.

The "date" lasted for 4 days.

We had to leave after the last piece of left-over
pizza crust was gone, and we ran out of cigarettes.

We celebrated our 19th anniversary this week!

15. A near-death experience. Seriously.
Edited on Thu Jul-24-08 09:05 AM by mikeytherat
About 10 minutes into our first date, driving to a movie, I notice a car coming at a high rate of speed through the grassy median. It is out of control, and heading straight toward us. I am boxed in on all sides, and the only way we're getting out of this alive is if all the other drivers around me do the right thing. Instantly. In Virginia.

At this point, I am certain we are f**ked.

Suddenly the truck ahead of me accelerates quickly, and the guy to my right yanks his car onto the shoulder. I am able to move over just far enough, and the out of control car passes by my driver's side just touching my outside mirror and spewing gravel all up the side of my car as he screeches to a halt. Amazingly, there is no real damage to any car, and no one is hurt. Apparently, someone towing a U-Haul decided to change lanes where the unfortunate driver was located, and he was forced to travel through a deep, grassy median, at highway speeds, toward oncoming traffic.

We never made the movie, but headed straight to a restaurant to drink!

Edited to add - married 18 years this October.

17. Wrong, but right in every other way...
Well, our first kinda date that wasn't even really meant to be a date came about accidentally. We consider it a date even though it really wasn't too much of one.

We had hung out a little bit while his friend (my then boyfriend's brother) was gone out of town for a month. I had moved out of my boyfriend's house because I was sick of his bad attitude, treating me like crap, and not putting any effort into our relationship. I had decided to try to gently break it off with him. First step, moving out. So I moved in with my grandparents. The day I was moving in my uncle called and asked if I wanted tickets to see Tool because people had backed out and there were two spares. I knew my then boyfriend's brother's friend was the only one who liked Tool, so I tried to get a hold of him but he never called me back until the people with the tickets were leaving to head to the show. So, we decided just to get together and watch movies since we both had nothing better to do. Well, we watched one movie, kissed, and spent the rest of the night together kissing and watching movies... and then in the morning after the movies were over we got busy.

Yes, it was wrong, but it was so right too. The next night I broke up with my then boyfriend because I knew it was over. Luckily, he did too (Or so he said to my face). I was also honest about kissing his brother's friend, which both he and his brother were pissed the friend for... but our relationship was in the pits and the only reason we were still together was because we'd been together for 3 years. The then-boyfriend was upset when he realized it was really over and I wasn't going to try to work things out. I told him he should have tried to fix things like I tried to, but he didn't want to until it was too late. Oh well.

Anyway, me and that friend have been together for over a year, and I don't regret a thing. I found a wonderful person that I love dearly even though I went about it wrong. And the thing is, we have the same beliefs about relationships, we are both the type to talk instead of argue, we both have similar ideas for our futures, etc. We have a very good relationship all thanks to some Tool tickets we didn't even get.

Now our first date out on the town was ordinary... we went to see the movie 28 Weeks Later.

Neither of us were intending a "date" at that point, but bystanders conspired to push our seats together while we were on the dance floor, or crowd around us shoving us together and next thing we knew we started feeling waaaay too comfortable together.

29. i don't know that it really qualified as a date
we first met when we got together with some mutual friends (he used to work with p, the husband, and a, the wife, has been my best friend for years) for drinks. we had a good time, i thought he was pretty cute and funny. a few days later, he asked a for my number. she asked me and i said fine but didn't hear from him.

the next weekend, the same friends and i decided to go to dinner. we kicked around a few ideas before finally settling on a place, which is where my now-boyfriend works. the three of us had dinner and his shift ended just as we were finishing dessert. the four of us went out and played pool and darts and just hung out.

when the bar closed, i offered to give him a ride home. he accepted and invited me inside. we hung out and watched 'bananas'...well, we started it...

that wasn't quite five months ago, but i don't know that i've ever been happier.

41. What memories!
I met my husband in a grad-level class, "Strategic Planning". We were assigned to a group project, along with two other women. One of the women instantly saw a match-making opportunity, and was a go-between for discerning whether either of us were involved with another person. An opening came up, where we needed to get together to work on the project (Thanksgiving weekend), and only he and I could pull it together. He invited me over to his house for dinner, football (USC v. Notre Dame), and work on the class project. Needless to say, he had "strategically planned", and we had dinner, ND won the game which was my pick, and I went home around 9:00, the next morning. We has been working (intensely) on that project since mid-Sept., so we already had a friendship going.

Second date was my initiative, at my apartment. But by that time all ulterior motives were out in the open. Third date, he took me out for my 30th b'day (our b'days are exactly 2 weeks apart), to a great mid-east restaurant that we still go to for a celebration. Fourth date was to the symphony...I had discovered classical music 2 years prior, and it turned out he had season tickets.

That was in 1990, we got married in 1996, after living together 3.5 years, and here we are, still going. As an aside, we were married in the Catholic Church, and we had a really cool priest who didn't insist we live apart. After talking to us for a couple of hours, he sat back and said that as far as he was concerned we were already married "in the eyes of God", and it was simply his part to make it okay with the Church.

I think we've finally learned how to fight constructively. An argument will go back and forth for an hour or so, and then we're off to talking about the next fun thing to do. He's my best friend!

For those not familiar with them, they are a raunchy hard rock band (think Guns'N'Roses). I love the band and had already seen them a couple of times; he wasn't familiar with them. Turned out he really liked them too. Before the show, we went out to dinner at a restaurant not far from the club. I had duck and he had octopus. After the show, we....I'll stop here. :D
