Since I have started keeping a blog

1. If people read it, maybe there's a point

I had a Salon blog for awhile a few years ago. I put a lot of work into it — research, formulating my opinion — but it hardly ever got responses, so I stopped.

I guess if you think of a blog as just a diary, readers and responses wouldn't matter much. I'd want one to stimulate discussion, though.

7. I do a blog about local stuff like

restaurant reviews, hiking, gardens, local music, farmer's market, etc.

I actually enjoy doing it and it gets a few hundred hits a day plus some comments. If it wasn't fun, I wouldn't do it.

That's my opinion. If you want to write a blog go for it, and don't let anyone discourage you from doing it.

People do read them, so why not? Sometimes it's good to get your thoughts written down.

I don't read blogs, other than the one excerpt I read recently that became an issue.

If I did read blogs, it would not matter to me in the least if they could "actually write well." Hell, I am not even sure what that means. And I suspect that answer would vary from one person to another.

I tend to look at the message being conveyed, rather than the the prim, proper, prose, and occasional misspelling. I DO appreciate proper grammar, but it's not a deal buster for me.

Self indulgent nonsense? Well, perhaps some of them are. I wouldn't know. But so the fuck what if they are self indulgent? You don't HAVE to read them. Nor respond. I happen to think, (and know), that journaling and writing is a very therapeutic and healthy outlet.

there are news blogs that are kept to keep people informed, and there are some that are damned good sources of news.

there are personal blogs, which may or may not be meant to inform, or may just be a person's opportunity to express themselves... if it is self indulgent, those who don't want to read are certainly not bound by any kind of reason to read them

there are topical blogs: sports, tv, movies, etc. that are a person's chance to share their ideas and thoughts on those subjects.

to say "blog" is really far too narrow of a question to ask. One needs to ask about types of blogs and how are they perceived by those who read them and those who may not necessarily read them.

What kind of a blog do you keep? Is it a personal one? I mean it can be a good exercise in writing what is going on in one's life and how one is feeling etc.

There is always an element of narcissism in writing... one who writes, does so because they can, and they believe that people want to read what they might write. Not a pathological level usually, although there are those who blog in an exhibitionistic way also. But, whatever, I doubt that blogging has changed much except that people may get news and information from news and topical blogs.

26. There are many reasons to blog

some do it for the attention. Some do it because they need to vent. Some do it because they feel they have something important to say.

I'm sure there are more reasons for doing it, but those are the ones that came to the top of my head first.
