I'm sorry. I just don't. But the only other person that I know of who feels the same way is my friend Alan.
Please tell me there's someone on DU that also feels he's overrated?

3. Eddie Izzard is the shit.
It's funny because just reading transcripts of his stuff isn't that funny. When you see videos of him performing it, though, his facial expressions and tones of voice make it hilarious.

"Do you have a flag?"

9. I think the problem with me is, if someone overhypes something to me...
I tend to be underwhelmed. And after that, I just can't get into it.
Happened to me with the movie 'Repo Man' as well. I HATE when people really inflate something for me before they show it to me, because it can't possibly live up to MY expectations from how they describe it. So I end up disappointed.
I think if the first time I had seen him, it had been without any hype and just on its own merits, I might've liked it a lot better.

He was like the reverse Jerry Seinfeld of stand up. Seinfeld has weak stand up material, but masterful technique.

I thought I was going to die laughing - plus he was so smart...

people who made me laugh til my face hurt:

Paula Poundstone

Eddie Izzard

Bill Hicks (and so sexy, too.) damn.

on edit, how about Billy Connolly? (whom many of those folks got their improv style from, I have read.)

39. I adore Paula Poundstone
Edited on Sat Jul-19-08 03:51 PM by MonkeyFunk
have seen her many times.

I'd heard so much about Bill Hicks for so long, that I finally got some of his DVDs and settled in, preparing to be wowed.

I wasn't.

Hard to say why - comedy is so personal. He just didn't make me laugh.

Similarly, I'd heard so much about what a genius Mitch Hedburg was, and finally went to see him - and he sucked. Of course, he was too wasted to put on much of a show.

I went to see Bob Saget once, expecting it to suck - we just felt like going to The Improv. And he cracked me up! go figure.

40. Saget is pretty good - I think some of those comedians who become famous
for tv and games shows were SO much better as stand-ups.

Ellen Degerenes was very, very funny, as was Brett Butler. I think a lot of those folks become stereotypes when they get a tv show...

41. I used to see Ellen a lot
in SF in the 80s when she played the clubs. You always knew she was a special talent.

My favorite comedian working the clubs now is Kathleen Madigan. We see her whenever she comes around, and she's just great.

45. I love the other three, but don't see Hicks as similar.
He didn't strike me as smart. Not stupid, either. Just pissed off at everything. Most of his stuff was pretty obvious, and he didn't have a delivery system to make it work as humor, to me.

Then again, i don't like the insult style of humor much. Dennis Leary, Bill Hicks, Richard Belzer, Sam Kinneson. They don't seem funny or insightful, just very bitter. Carlin, Pryor, Lewis Black, Izzard, Connally... Lots of comedians manage biting political commentary without sounding like they are in a drunken self-pitying rage.

But it's subjective, no doubt. He had a fan base, and he's still talked about with reverence. So my opinion is just my opinion--says more about me than him, no doubt. :)

46. some of his comments about religion are very thoughtful
and I didn't think he was always angry... more insightful in a "rock and roll" kind of way... His rants on drugs ( and I was never a big drug taker) are hilarious.

I think he was much more insightful than Sam Kinison, whom I despised.

Isn't it funny how different people's perspectives are? ;)

50. My brother showed me a clip of his in French--
so now I actually find him to be amusante in deux languages. Not knee-slappingly funny, but wry. I think his act hinges on wry and clever, although I am a sort who is very satisfied with wry and clever. It beats broad and dullish, like, um, I dunno Carrot Top? (just thinking of the opposite and unfunniest. Gallagher I never liked so I might just have it against prop comics.)
