I'm fishing for subscription suggestions for a new mom
Not so much motherly as it is an idea to give daughter something to do between feedings.

I thought about Reader's Digest but haven't read it in yeeears.

Is there anything monthly I could find that is a compilation of short stories that would be worth reading and isn't a load of conservative crapola?

1. Good Housekeeping.
It has a short story in every issue.
Easy to read, good pics and recipes, decorating tips.
Not too bad.

2. Ohhh yea!
It doesn't have those "how to tell if your SO is losing his/her mind" type quizzes? I'll have no part in that hehe

Good idea!

3. I guess even more important... it does have a parenting section
and most of the advice seems reasonable.

4. Playgirl?
Men's Fitness.

Ooh, GQ. Well dressed, chiseled men. There you go.

I kid, I kid.

My mom digs Reader's Digest, so I guess that would be my choice.

7. I think it's more a matter of
what's of interest to your daughter. Myself, I couldn't sit down with Reader's Digest, as it doesn't interest me. But give me a copy of Flex, Car & Driver or VegNews and I'm one happy little monkey.

What's of interest to your daughter?

12. I have WRITTEN for Cosmo...
...primarily, I suppose, because I had a brief affair with an editor there. She thought my "man's perspective" on basic Cosmo themes might be interesting. It was, for a short time. But then I was asked to write a column on kinky sex, which I did, but it was deemed "too kinky" by Helen Gurley Brown herself, and was never published. That was the end of all that.

18. No, it's an actual print magazine.
Edited on Thu Jul-17-08 01:52 PM by Blue-Jay
We get it, and it's probably my favorite reading material (aside from books).

edit: My only problem is that it only comes out every two months, instead of monthly. We renew every year at the Greenfest for $10/year, but you can get it from their website for $12.

15. Sun Magazine
There's no advertising (it's nonprofit), it's literary and intellectually stimulating but not pretentious. I've never read an issue of the Sun and not been moved to tears.

It's quite real. I strongly recommend. Subscriptions to this magazine make a good gift for any occasion.

28. Oh, and here's a bonus:
Gift subscriptions for winter holiday gifting are 50% off.

You just can't go wrong with The Sun. I've learned so much from their interviews. It's the most mind-broadening and heart-opening magazines I've ever encountered.

This and crossword puzzles kept my mind alive during those first three months of breastfeeding.

31. That is where she is...
In spite of all the easy excuses to just goto formula she is determined to keep breastfeeding. It is so tiring for her now, so I'm plotting a diversion between feedings.

32. Good for her.
I found that my babe seemed to want infinite nursing his first couple of weeks, and I was exhausted and contemplating a switch to formula. I talked to the pediatrician, and she suggested I try giving him a pacifier to satisfy him between feedings. I had been reluctant to use a pacifier because I didn't want to deal with breaking the habit later down the road, but I gave it a shot. Immediately, he nursed less and I was given enough space to make and eat a meal between feedings. If your friend is overwhelmed by frequency of feedings, encourage her to try a pacifier.

Oh, and breaking the pacifier habit was not a problem. We never gave it to him in bed, and we took it away from him entirely at 4-5 months, and never looked back.

Good for you for being such a supportive friend.

34. I did, and she is
She's my daughter by the way, the mother. ;)

She had the same fears with the pacifier. Actually, she is thinking of all that "breaking" later stuff. Being held, bouncing, napping with her, etc...

I told her "dang! Let him be an infant and don't worry about all that stuff until YOU, the mom, feel the need."

Thats kind of what sparked me to ask this question. I really didn't want to give her a subscription to a magazine that says never hold your baby too much, never let your baby sleep with you, never play Black Sabbath real loud in the next room, etc..."

She is an against the grain kind of girl and I like her that way. Umm, I think she got that from me :D

:)

36. Thanks for suggesting The Sun Magazine
Edited on Sun Jul-20-08 09:58 AM by Inchworm
I ordered my daughter a subscription and even I am looking forward to it. I'm a reader but not much on novel type books. I've tried many genres and usually get bored with books about chapter two. This may be just what I've been looking for.

Thanks!

23. As far as parenting stuff goes, I do like Mothering.
It's much more empowerment-focused, where the other parenting magazines tend to focus on stuff you need to buy and the latest disease or obscure risk you should be afraid of.

27. It's not like the Star or Enquirer
Pick up a copy the next time you're at the store. It's very well written. I meant it's a gossip rag in that they usually have an article about some celebrity/millionaire's murder or an ugly high-profile divorce. It's a very good magazine.

39. Harper's
A GREAT magazine, very in-depth articles.
I don't get it now, because I'm never sitting
for that long,(unless I'm on the computer :))

I had a subscription when I had my second child
and I DID look forward to sitting reading it while
I nursed her.

You can throw in Mother Jones for another $10.00 a year!
