I have worthless dogs. Worthless WATCHdogs, anyway.
I apparently left the front door unlocked when I went to bed last night, and at some point (initially I remembered it to be 1:30, but I can't believe it lasted 2 hours, and since it was over at 3:30 I'm thinking it must have occurred at 2:30 instead) in the middle of the night I wake up to dogs barking and lunging off the bed and a person standing in the bedroom doorway. I'd fallen asleep with the tv on so there was enough light to recognize the person immediately upon opening my eyes.

The girl that used to live here with me was about a block up the street "kicking it" I guess and started getting these major, intolerable pains that she gets in varying degrees on a regular basis. It seems this time it was SO bad that she couldn't deal with it at all - and by the time she'd started crying she decided she'd walk the block over here with her friend that's visiting her for a week and see if I could do anything to help her. She was smart in not knocking because that would have freaked me and the dogs out more than waking up to her standing there would have done. I gave her some pain relievers and got her relaxed, and when she started getting groggy they left. I know there's no way in HELL she'd wake me up under anything other than the most severe of situations, so knowing that made it easy to not be annoyed - and I'm glad I could be here to help her.

The DOGS, on the other hand. Thank goodness it wasn't a serial killer paying me a visit in the middle of the night. Dude would have been on top of me before they realized anything was going on. LOL Sheesh. So much for the idea of dogs as an early warning system or protectors. :eyes:

2. Couldn't she have called? That is freaky.
I would have had a heart attack. That is one of the very reasons I don't want a gun. I am scared that I'd freak out and shoot. I would never ever go into someone's house like that unexpectedly.

3. Damn, I'd hate to wake up to that
but, don't they know her walk and smell and look?

I'd prefer dogs that were cool about people they know/have lived with not going nuts when they stop by.

8. They do know her, but I don't think they had a clue until they jumped off the bed -
-and she spoke to them. Then they were happy - but for a brief moment they were disoriented and barking madly. I AM happy that it wasn't a major issue and that they didn't go major nuts - but even though I wouldn't have wanted the noise and commotion I STILL call bullshit on their job handling abilities! lol

4. at least they woke up when she was in the room!
:scared:

That would have been a terrifying way to wake up - I'm sorry

At least you could help her, but I agree with Shell - she could have called first.

10. I would have been a million more times annoyed if she'd called.
Cell phone in the other room - etc. I dunno - she knows me and the household routine very well, and I know her well enough to know showing up out of the blue is NOT something she'd just do or take lightly. She came in the house quietly on purpose, after trying the knob and finding it unlocked, because she felt that would be the most quiet and least disturbing way to do it. That ended up being entirely accurate. I think a phone call or knock at the door would have been much more frightening and certainly more disorienting than what actually occurred. I never was scared because although I was startled awake initially I immediately saw her and knew who it was.

Another "that damned dog" story that's kind of funny. I was sleeping on the couch (with my dog) once and we had a bit of a windstorm in the middle of the night. At 4am the front door blew open with such force and intensity it was as if someone kicked it open with all their might from the outside. I was immediately up from the couch, groggy, and at the door shutting it and slowly figuring out what was going on. The dog lifted his head and looked at me (also groggily) from his place on the couch, figured I had it handled, and flopped his head back down and went right back to sleep. LOL Not even so much as a tiny little WOOF from him. :eyes:

5. Our house door squeaks loudly whenever it's opened
It's loud enough to wake me and the dogs. My wife complains about the noise but I refuse to oil the hinges.

6. That's...freaky
I'm glad you could help her too, but that would've freaked me out more than a little.

And I feel your pain re: the "watchdogs". I have a pug and and English bulldog...the pug barks at the wind blowing, but he's a PUG. Ergo, not the biggest meanest bark you've ever heard. The bulldog on the other hand, has a bark that sounds like he'd rip your head off...but even when my crazy neighbor walks in my house (middle of the day, mind you) he just wiggles and wags and drools and tries every way possible to get pet. :eyes:

7. If she lived with you the dogs may have recognized her.
They may have recognized her scent and thought it was ok for her to be there.

16. They were so excited to see her it was ridiculous.
My dog has always been very googly-eyed over her. He ADORES her. It's quite pathetic, actually. The other dog is her little dog that ended up staying here when she stormed out in November.

11. that would still scare the bejesus out of me, even if i knew the person
I'd much much rather they call or knock on the door first. I agree with the poster up thread, if i had a gun, i might be scared into shooting first.

14. Well, when I don't want them to they are awake and have stuff to SAY, dammit!
You know how these dogs get about their bedtime - nothing to say, they're sleepin'!

13. For a while after my divorce in 1985
my ex would break into my house occasionally, and I would sometimes wake up and he would be standing there looking at me.

My 'watchdogs' wouldnt bark, because they knew him and were happy to see him. Under the circumstances, I wish they would have done like yours, because I did have a restraining order for domestic violence so severe my children and I had to hide out in a woman's shelter until I got the order issued.
