Oh, boy, looks like the whole east coast is in for THUNDERSTORMS tonight.
Hooray for us in NC, cuz we need the rain coming off a horrible several years of drought.
Better us than more for the mid-west!

1. only a little respite for us in the midwest
we had T storms last night, looks like rain right now and later in the week more thunderstorms. Yay (not). It's been about 15 years since we had anything close to this kind of a wet summer.

2. I was there in '93 living in St. Joseph, MO. The MO River flooded our water treatment
plant and we were without water for a week. They had to airlift (by helicopter) big machines to Kansas City to dry out.

Our house was on high ground--no problems. And we used our pool for water to flush/wash dishes.
We had flown into the St. Joe airport (hubby is general aviation pilot) after a family trip to
Georgia. When we landed, they immediately flew the plane out; we left the airport on a road
with sandbags holding back the water. That night the levee broke and the airport was flooded.

Some mess.

I hear it's worse this year than in '93. Hope you're ok.

3. 93 was scary because our house got hit by lightning
and that was pretty freaky but as far as precipitation this year is far, far worse. My hometown of Cedar Rapids is (as no doubt you've heard) hit really badly. I live in SE Wisconsin now and our town had flooding and there is some concern over the stability of the bridges that span the river that runs through the city. Now we come to find out that DHS considers bridge stability a matter of national security so they won't say what the hell is going on. That disturbs me more than the weather I think.

4. Yeah. It's that BS Patriot Act claiming bridge maintenance records can't be made public.
It's another way of not providing accountability.

When we left St. Joseph, we moved to Lincoln, NE. We ended up in a house that had been hit by lightning in the late 60's and had major restoration work--mostly necessitated by water damage putting out the fire.

Fast forward to 2007 and we're living in a house in Chapel Hill that we manage to burn down last summer.
We're now in a rental, that I heard recently from a realtor had a fire some years ago where an invalid
man died! He was smoking in bed and his wife went out to do errands and returned to find the house on fire.

Good grief. Too many disasters. Everywhere.

7. Oh, you were WAY up north.
I'm extreme south - Swedesboro. Farmy/rural area just a few mins from the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Hot, VERY humid here. Just the way I like it. :P

20. We had a dog who would run and hide from windows at the sound of thunder or sight of lightning.
Once she went and jumped in the bathtub! She was a true midwest dog--born in tornado alley.

Thunder and lightning have never bothered our cats--also from tornado alley.

11. I just got drenched running out to shut the car windows
I heard a little bit of thunder and then the skies opened up again with a hard rain!

But the grass looks nice and green here and the sky is clearing up as I type.

It felt good, actually, getting rained on. It's been wicked muggy here the last few days.

maybe this rain will get rid of that thick humidity in the air.
