26. I've camped in similar woods
when I was in the Army. "Army camping" is not like normal camping. It involves setting up big tents, turning dirt roads into mud-wallows with big stinking diesel trucks, and always encumbered by a rifle and backback.

We were in a forest area like that, though not quite as hilly. Still, it had the quaint villages, with the quaint tavern/gasthaus, with always delicious food and beer, when we could get away from the Army nonsense for a while.

Trees, fog, mist, and sometimes snow, it was a beautiful area. Haunted, they say.

Great pictures.

28. Not bad memories at all
For a draftee, there was no better place in the world to be stationed than south west Germany (near Stuttgart). Safe and well-fed (again, that good German food!), I was very lucky. Most draftees at that time were sent to Vietnam.

16. it's the trees
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!
Du grünst nicht nur
zur Sommerzeit,
Nein auch im Winter, wenn es schneit.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum!
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!
Wie oft hat nicht zur Weihnachtszeit
Ein Baum von dir mich hoch erfreut!
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum!
Du kannst mir sehr gefallen!

O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum!
Dein Kleid will mich
was lehren:
Die Hoffnung und Beständigkeit
Gibt Trost und Kraft
zu jeder Zeit.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum!
Das soll dein Kleid
mich lehren.

There are buildings from various eras in Fulda, and you can visit the tomb of St. Boniface (and all his relics, too, or bits of Boniface, if you will).

That's always what I think of when I see images like the ones you've shared -- that and a wonderful drive through the Black Forest that a friend and I took during the '80s.

:hi:

Caspar David Friedrich, for those of you who may not have seen his work:

(and that's about it for my Deutsch)

It kind of reminds me of the forests here in West Virginia, minus the chalets of course. I regret I did not get to visit the forest when I was in Germany back in the early 90's.

Is acid rain still causing problems w/ the forest?

The Black Forest is comparable to the Smokies.

Acid rain is still a problem but I think it got a bit better in the last years. At least you don't hear as much of it anymore.
