Good vibes please for Mr. DTBK - his first colonoscopy tomorrow
I think he's a little nervous, though he doesn't let on.

2. Yes, he's drinking the HalfLytely right now
I've had two of them, with clean bills of health both times - hope he gets the same news as you and I both did.

17. My thoughts exactly
Although I was unconscious for the procedure, because they were doing an upper GI with the esophageal camera. But the prep the night before had me sobbing from pain and from the misery of drinking that stuff for hours.

23. Best gift is a good clean colon! Hope everything comes out all right in the end!!!
I watched my own colonoscopy... didn't take the anesthesia -- just anti-anxiety meds by mouth -- Very interesting! The doctor treated me as if I were a resident, describing what he was doing and what he saw.

The day before, I took my citrate of magnesia, and then I went to see 2 1/2 movies...lost some time in the bathroom. I felt a bit lightheaded from not eating... it was a very spiritual and cleansed feeling!

I can understand why people go without eating for that experience.

25. I had no problem with the stuff I got
my only angst was not being able to eat - as someone who doesn't really eat meals but GRAZES ENDLESSLY, that surely was torment for me :o

3. Conscious sedation - he won't remember a thing - nothing to it
Hubby has had 3, I think, and I had my first a couple of years ago. The prep is definitely the worst part!

13. Nowadays they knock you completely out.
I had my second one last October, and it was a breeze. I've had two, and the second one was far easier. Even the prep wasn't so bad. It was pills and lots of water instead of that awful golightly.

24. Hi Pithlet -- I've been told that you are responsive and not really "knocked out"...
Versed is the drug of choice in our hospitals -- it has amnesiac qualities. It works quickly and the patient doesn't remember anything.

I had it for a uterine polopectomy and again for an endoscopy procedure.

Drugs have really improved since they took my tonsils out at age 4 -- I still remember them clamping the mask on my face and fighting with the nurses!

27. My first colonoscopy used Versed
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 08:37 AM by Pithlet
I went back for my second late last year with the same doc, and and he actually used an anestheseologist and knocked me out completely. There may be some docs and hospitals who do it the old way, and it may also depend on insurance. Even with the Versed, though it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it would be. I will say that I prefer the second way much better though. I remembered it with Versed, though some people don't. I always tell people who are about to go through it for the first time that it won't be as bad as you think it will. You're right, things have definitely improved.

5. I've had 2, so I'll repeat/emphasize what's been said already
1. The prep (drinking endless amounts of laxative and spending a funfillled night in your bathroom) is the worst part.
2. They keep you good and sedated
3. The cost benefit is well worth it; if polyups are found, they're removed (hence greatly reducing the chance cancer develops); if cancer is found, and it's found early, it's very beatable.
4. They say eat light afterward; however, I went to Sonic and got a bacon, egg, & steak burrito for breakfast.

Good luck

6. My husband had one about 3 years ago.
He was sooo funny after he was done with the procedure. You'll be just fine, but, whoever goes with you and stays with you after, might have some funny stories to tell.;)

8. I've had one before...
They really aren't bad. There was no pain whatsover when I woke up, and a few hours later, I was able to eat a delicious cheeseburger and fries with no problems. As another poster said, the worst part is the nasty laxative they make you drink to prep, and the fact that you can't really eat the day before (I was soooo hungry). :)

Hopefully all goes well for your husband!

9. best wishes. preping is the worst
staying awake with minimal sedation or no sedation lets you watch the video of the colonoscopy. The human body really is an amazing thing to behold. Even the inside of your colon! The are no nerve ending inside the colon so there is no pain, just pressure of air and water being pumped in to expand and clear the passage to enable the doctor to see clearly. In Europe most colonoscopies are done without any sedation. At least that's what my doctor said as we conversed during the colonoscopy.

For those over 60 a colonoscopy is a very, very smart thing to do. Far better to find something early than too late.Do yourself a BIG favor.

15. Thanks everyone
I've also had 3 colonoscopies myself courtesy of my beloved mother dying of colon cancer. I think he doesn't listen to me when I describe my experiences - I also made the mistake of telling him my mother's first colonoscopy (diagnostic) lasted 4 HOURS - that was a big mistake!

I'm hoping his will turn out just fine. Poor guy's been running to the bathroom all evening. We have company from Kansas, and we dined on delicious chicken tikka, mutton biryani, naan and birthday cake while he had chicken broth and water. At least he can eat tomorrow afternoon if he feels like it.

19. I don't know what they gave me initially, but I told the butt doc:
"I understand we are going to be getting up close and personal"....as I grinned.

That is all I remember until I woke up.

He called me on the phone later in the day and the converation kinda went like this:

Doc: "Well, you are beautiful"

Me: Uh, nobody has quite spoken to me in that manner before, but, uh, thank you"

Kind of cracked me up...oops, sorry for the pun.
