1. Yes.
And it was an unpleasant experienced. Locking in a room for 2+days with a crazy person who drove the rest of us mad...

3. I got summoned to be a jurist but I had
moved out of that jurisdiction, so I was disqualified. It would have been
a very long commute for me, as a single mother and trying to work, etc.

24. Similar thing with me.
I got called for jury duty in Guildford, England. I'd been living in the US for four years... I told them I'd be glad to serve if they'd paid travelling and boarding expenses. Suffice to say I heard nothing back.

Mark.

5. Yes, last week actually.
I was the lone holdout for about an hour but in the end we convicted him of "unauthorized use of a motor vehicle". It's a good thing it wasn't a more serious charge or we'd still be there because I have problems making decisions. I can't decide what to have for breakfast, so how am I going to decide whether someone is guilty of something or not?

6. No but came close to getting on two juries.
First one was a sexual harassment trial. Second was a trial involving what sounded like a drug deal gone wrong.

7. I served on three courts-martials
Called for jury duty once but was not randomly picked for a grand jury probe into highway construction project graft and corruption.

8. Yes. The prosecution couldn't make its case.
It was a case of what you might call stereotypical spousal abuse. The defendant should have gone to jail, but the prosecutor never came through with the right evidence. I had a gut feeling, but my duty required that I vote to acquit.

Oddly, it was not too long after I served that the state passed legislation allowing jurors to ask questions of both sides' lawyers in criminal trials. If we had been able to get clarification on several points, it's likely we would have voted to convict.

9. Yes.
It was a kidnapping and rape case. I thought it was a very interesting experience. I think everyone should stop trying to dodge it and do it at least one time.

10. Yes, civil cases only...
Every criminal panel that I've been called to, I've been tossed off!

Oh well...

Civil is interesting too...

Why do you ask?

11. I was on a murder trial this past December.
It was a pretty heinous crime...the defendant was found guilty of 2nd Degree murder.

12. No, I've been sent a summons a few times
but I always got out of it due to child care responsibilities or working for a very small company who had nobody else to do my job while I was gone.

Considering the per diem doesn't even cover lunch and parking, and I've never worked at a company that pays while one's on jury duty, I really can't afford to serve. My sister did a month long murder trial a while back, but she works for UPS and they had people to cover for her shift and paid her while she was out.

13. Not just any jury
FEDERAL COURT jury. Two companies trying to get money from one another. Wanted to gouge my eyes out by the end of a two week long trial. It was a trial for me alright! x(

16. My wife was in a disturbing court case
The prosecutor presented overwhelming evidence against the defendant who had sexually molested many young kids in a day-care center. The guy got sentenced to more than 60 years.

17. I've been called 4 or 5 times
Only served once. It was a criminal break-in case. We never got to vote, though, as the defendant copped a plea after the first day's testimony. They usually seem to get me when I've got some medical issue - like being eight months pregnant or recovering from major surgery. I think it would be interesting to actually see a trial through to the end.

18. As a lawyer who has tried cases to juries, I'd LOVE to serve on one
But it would never happen. I've never even been called for one. If I were to be called, one side or the other would doubtless strike me, probably peremptory (i.e., they don't have to have a reason).

19. Yes, years ago
It was a wrongful death suit. The family of a woman who was shot by a highway patrolman during a traffic stop was suing the state for lots of money.

She was doing 90 mph when she was stopped, then pulled a gun on the cop. Her blood alcohol was about 5 times the legal limit. I think there may have been some coke involved, too. As unfortunate as it was, we didn't award them any money.

20. Yes
I was the lone juror voting for acquittal in a federal court. I was able to convince the other jurors one by one. I felt like Henry Fonda in 12 Angry Men. It bordered on jury nullification but I honestly believe that the feds failed to make their case.

22. Yes
I was a juror on a criminal case that lasted about two weeks. I had left my job, and was just packing up our apartment, getting ready to move. So it was no hardship to serve. Except I sat next to bad breath lady, and there was one juror who didn't want to be unanimous with us. I was ready to kick him in the shins after about two days of deliberation.

23. I've tried - but I keep being struck
x(

twice I've been on the panel and one of the attorneys used their strike to remove me.

(I worked for a Plaintiff's firm in Worker's Compensation and Personal Injury and now work for Mr. Debi and he mainly practices in criminal and family law - so prosecutors and defense attorneys don't like me much.)

I actually would like to serve jury duty. I know what it's like to prepare for trial, I've sat in on many trials but have never seen what happens back in the jury room.

26. Yes and it was a travesty
A woman claimed that a man on the bus service the university provided had made a sexual remark to her and now she had PTSD. When she complaind the university GAVE her a car. All the witnesses said it never happened, the police said it never happened. And the defense settled with her! The judge had to throw her out of court three times!

Later the lawyer asked me about it. I said he shouldn't have settled. It was obvious bullshit and I would have held out and at least caused a hung jury.

Khash.

It was a drug bust case but we let the guy off. It felt like entrapment. Also got called for US District Court but wasn't selected to sit.
I disagree with many people who bad mouth jury duty. I think it's a form of public service. Of course with all the crap happening lately, I'm growing convinved that unless you are rich, the court system is really a farce.............

28. I was chosen for one
It was a civil case which was supposed to last at least two months. But it was settled out of court the night before the trial started. I wouldn't mind serving on a jury anytime they called me, actually.

Convicted on the 2nd ballot and wound up getting two years. Turned out he was a serial offender but we didn't know that at the time.

30. No. But I was called twice in 5 years.
I did everything I could to get off. I was lucky both times.

I know, it's my "civic duty" but I can't imagine how I would sit through a trial.
