I would say that if you've ever loved someone, you have answered your own question.
Even if the love isn't returned.
And it isn't always. C'est La Vie

10. Hard not to

Romantic love can be Hell, sometimes, but there's a lot more to Love than that (and, besides, it can also be Heaven).

Some men are like me, they worry and doubt
Trouble their minds day in and day out
Too busy with livin' to worry about
A thing called love

But then I see a mother's tenderness,
As she holds her young close to her breast
Then I think, my God, this world was blessed
With a thing called love

Can't see it with your eyes
Hold it in your hands
Like the wind it covers our land
Strong enough to rule the heart of any man
This thing called love

It can lift you up
It can put you down
Take your world and turn it around

Ever since time nothing's ever been found
Stronger than love

14. Nope
I believe that people start out with this beautiful romantic illusion of another person and this overwhelming attraction and what they want from being a part of that person's life and then they learn to simply be tolerant if they are strong enough to deal with somebody else's idiocyncrasies and neurosis. Don't listen to me, I've been married and divorced 3 times, so what in the hell do I know? I can't tell you what love is, but I sure can tell you what it ain't. Hahaha!

15. I believe in love alone
Money can't buy it... baby
Sex can't buy it... baby
Drugs can't buy it... baby
You can't buy it... baby

I believe that love alone might do these things for you
I believe in love alone yeah yeah

Take the power to set you free
Kick down the door and throw away the key
Give up your needs...
Your poisoned seeds
Find yourself elected to a different kind of creed

I believe that love alone might do these things for you
I believe that love alone might do these things for you
I believe in the power of creation
I believe in the good vibration
I believe in love alone yeah yeah

Won't somebody tell me what we're coming to
It might take forever till we watch those dreams come true
All the money in the world won't buy you peace of minde
You can have it all but you still won't be satisfied

Money can't buy it... baby
Sex can't buy it... baby
Drugs can't buy it... baby
You can't buy it... baby

Now...
Hear this
Pay attention to me
'cause I'm a rich white girl and it's plain to see
i got every kind of thing that the money can buy
Let me tell you all about it
Let me amplify
I got DIAMONDS...
You heard about those
I got so many that I can't close my safe at night in the dark
Lying awake in a sick dream

I believe that love alone might do these things for you
I believe that love alone might do these things for you
I believe in the power of creation
I believe in the good vibration
I believe in love alone yeah yeah

18. As in romantic love in the traditional sense? A philosophical answer.
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 07:32 AM by Chan790
No...it's as dead as Nietzsche's god.

A cascade of impulses and phenomena {lust, attraction, companionship, the desire to not die alone (which is impossible...everybody dies alone, even in a room full of people.), reproduction, child-rearing, self-sacrifice,...} which gets grouped together and referred to as "love" in a collectivist sense because people need something to believe in larger than themselves, their neurochemistry, their minds; a salve for the soul.

My logical empiricism rages against such presumptions in mislabeling. Things are as they appear, no matter the appeal to be other than such. I don't to believe in "love" for the same reason I don't believe in god, the tooth fairy, free lunches, IRS errors in my favor and zipless fucks; all flights of imagination and desire...and yet, I want to. I don't care if it's a mis-characterization of basic human needs...I want to feel this way too.

That God does not exist, I cannot deny; That my whole being cries out for God, I cannot forget. - Jean-Paul Sartre

Edit: Spelling, grammar, punctuation. Let this be a lesson to you...get out of bed, brush your teeth, take a shower...then post to DU.

29. A concept from "Fear of Flying" by Erica Jong
The zipless fuck is absolutely pure. It is free of ulterior motives. There is no power game . The man is not "taking" and the woman is not "giving." No one is attempting to cuckold a husband or humiliate a wife. No one is trying to prove anything or get anything out of anyone. The zipless fuck is the purest thing there is. And it is rarer than the unicorn. And I have never had one.

31. ...in the middle of your marriage...
without consequences or concern or hurt feelings or betrayal. Consider the concept as effectively excluding swinging as well.

Or to put it another way..."a guiltless affair with a total stranger"

It doesn't work out for her in the book either.

19. Yes.
I've been married for almost eighteen years and thought that love was a struggle and constant compromise. Now I've been with somebody else for eighteen months and I have discovered that love is a struggle and a compromise with bliss as the reward for one's efforts. There are different kinds of love. I think many of us aren't willing to wait until we find the real thing but we should.

22. yes, very much so
even when it hurts and is painful, it's still love. Heck, maybe even more so, as if you did NOT care it would not hurt.

I think Love is a very complex and profound thing, and has a motley assortment of expressions. Love allows us to hope, and love can both elevate us and bring us crashing down. Even if it is just a chemical response, that does not make it less real.

Both the obvious positive expressions of it and the negative expressions of it, such as insecurity and jealousy and hate, are very deep-seated in our primitive animal brains, and I feel are strongly related to why we (and other social animals) evolved to where we are now.

Love is a many spendored thing, and it's right behind you!! RUN AWAY!

27. My dear briv1016...
Yes, I do believe in love...

Love has transformed my life...

It took my narrow, quiet, virginal little life, and blew it all to hell...

I suffered, I cried, I grew...

It was the ride of my life!

And it will never be over...

Somedays, just the belief in Love is all I have to go on. Still, that gets me through. Has to.

Having been alone for a while now, I am more acutely aware of what I'm missing and how much I still have to learn. I hope to get the chance someday.
