Weird collaborative fiction writing. Click here to begin.

There's a mysterious clue that needs to be interpreted. Your friend owns a book that consists of pictures, recipes, and excerpts from scholarly books. On one page of the book is something that is visibly connected with the clue. Unfortunately, you can't even recognize the language that the book is written in.

Your friend has a single subscription that provides a rack of five different newspapers every day. Some of the newspapers are in languages that subscribers can't read, so the subscription includes occasional free T-shirts, socks, and bottles of shampoo. That motivates people to keep subscribing.

One of the five newspapers happens to be written in Irish Gaelic. That's how your friend recognizes that the book is itself written in Irish Gaelic. That's the first step to unraveling the mystery.

Also, in the future, books and dishwashers will be designed so that you can wash books in dishwashers without damaging the books.

2. Is the visibly connected something a picture or something else on
the page?
Say, a chemical or chocolate stain in the shape of a maltese falcon on an irish gailic scientific/recipe book?
Hmmm. No.

Or a stain from something in a "living organism" imprinted in the book via a text spell that can only be made clearer by washing the book in a dishwasher with bio-degradable soap?

I'm thinking ectoplasm from a golem book made possible by some sort of irish spellcaster who had to murder someone to bring the book alive? And you're trying to find out who was murdered and what for?

Ah well. Trying to find the logic in your collaborative fiction premise.

3. Now it occurs to me that the stuff about dishwashers and books could have been disinformation.
Someone is loading a dishwasher with books. Someone else asks, "Is this going to damage the books?" The person who is doing the loading says, "No, of course not. How long has it been since they started designing dishwashers and books so that you can wash books in dishwashers without damaging the books?"

Perhaps the books are being hidden in the dishwasher. The dishwasher isn't going to be turned on. The rest could be a cover story to confuse temporal spies who don't know much about the future.

4. Ah, the red herring in the dishwasher.
I've heard of alternative cooking processes, but... :) As it is, hiding a codex with a secret clue in a dishwasher would be something the average person would not think of. Turn a casserole pan around and hide the book behind it, someone casually looking in might not see it. Same as wrapping it in foil and hiding it in the freezer with the ground beef.

Temperal spies from the past, now. Hmmm.

Sounds like a very confusing story you have there. I like my book golem idea, though.
