You know the kind. They go in, make a post, and then when they don't like what happens, they run to the lounge and moan and whine about it, or make the mods delete it, or act like it's UNBELIEVABLE that people would disagree with them! And STRONGLY at that!

Hello? You are aware that this is a message board, right? And a POLITICAL one at that? I've seen flame wars develop over computer processors, cell phone brands, video games and movie casting, just to name a few. What in the WORLD would make anyone think a POLITICAL MESSAGE BOARD would be any different? If you aren't willing to... discuss your opinions, maybe back them up, engage your fellow internetites in you know... discourse, what the fuck are you doing on a message board?

This has been going on for years, I know. But it always makes me shake my head.

People disagreeing with you, even if it is strongly, isn't a reason to hide. If you can't cope with it, maybe move on to the fuzzy wuzzie kitten chat group. If your convictions aren't strong enough to cope with argument from people essentially on your side, why are you even bothering to vent them?

This is an attack on no one person. This is a few years of noticing and just not getting it. I haven't even seen such a thread recently that I can recall. It was just on my mind, after reading through GDP this evening.

And, this in no way pertains to a normal, honest post in GDP that is met with "YOU EVIL BLOODSUCKING SLIME MONSTER, I HOPE YOUR EYEBALLS MELT IN TO YOUR CHEERIOS FOR EVER THINKING WHATEVER IT IS I KNOW YOU'RE THINKING DEEP DOWN IN YOUR BLACK BRAIN!!!!!"

Clearly, there is no discussion to be had there.

Seriously ... well, somewhat more seriously ... I'm a veteran of Usenet. DU ain't got nothin' on Usenet. Some of the individuals to whom you refer would have spent weeks in their basements after five minutes on one of the old PC forums or my former haunt, AWCUSA. One of the most intense flamewars I ever witnessed there was over whether one was a traitor to his or her nation (or a racist or whatever) for thinking electronic text would supplant bound books as favorite among history buffs and historians or whether books were king. Oh, and that led to the sexism angle. Why not queen? Is not the queen among historians and buffs just as valuable (or more so) as the king?

Was a lot of irony in that discussion.

smoking (that's a universal flame!), jeans in the dining room, and traditional vs anytime dining. :)

I've remained relatively stress free by avoiding GD-P, though I see now that I unhid it too early. The nastiness has even dampened my excitement about Obama's nomination. I guess this just shows that there are ugly, immature people everywhere, even on progressive boards. :shrug:
