For the last two weeks, it seems like every newscast ran some kind of story related to the movie. Local newscasts were particularly nauseating. The hype reminded me of the annual two week long Super Bowl stuff.

Dresses like in the movie.
Shoes like in the movie.
Handbags like in the movie.
Food like in the movie.
Making your own drinks just like the ones in the movie.
Parties with the movie as the theme.

WTF is with so many adults acting like 11 year olds at a Hannah Montana event?

It's very difficult to move conversations to serious issues because people are kind of
"cure" oriented --- :)

If it doesn't have a cure they don't want to hear about it ---

Or --- at least a "slash and burn" treatment for it!!!

4. I'm voting absentee from overseas so they can't check . . .
my movie attendance history.

Maybe it's just because I'm a guy, or that I don't live in New York, or am not obsessed with getting/not getting laid, or hearing the footsteps of time creeping up on me, but I.Just.Don't.Get.It.

Never did, never will.

(But then, I always thought Seinfeld was kind of boring, while Friends is still screamingly funny, even in 10-year-old reruns. What does that say about me?)

40. Well . . .
Samantha's urges can get tiresome, but I thought the "neighborly" scenes were funny ---
and these people had unbelievable bodies!

On the other hand . . . what should have been a beautiful scene --- Miranda and Steve in
"make up" sex wasn't. Miranda seemed really strained and anorexic.

And, by the way Steve and Smith didn't look too great either --
the photography on this movie was bad come to think of it --
cause obviously Smith is a really cute guy --- but not in this movie.

But seriously you found scenes in the movie to be borderline pornographic wow! The movie was very tame in comparsion to some of the episodes. And there was like maybe 3 sex scenes in the whole movie so I don't know if would consider that "tons"

74. The movie is so much more than about shopping and I think you have given poor representations of it.
Shopping, tons of pornographic scenes?

The series IMHO was wonderful as was the movie.

It deals with unconditional love, romantic love, forgiveness, the bonds of true friendship.
These are 4 very different independent women who created their own success in life, with their own buying power. Is there a problem with that? Ok, so they are apolitical, but frankly, I am so entrenched in politics that to me this is an escape. How can you not be touched by the fierceness of the true affection these women have for each other? If you saw the series you would know that these women have stood by each other through the most difficult emotional times, a loving family of their own choosing. Each one is imperfectly perfect and there is no attempt to hide it. If you saw the series, the into every week was Carrie in that tutu looking at a bus that has a sexy picture of her on its side which is an ad for her newspaper column. She gets splashed by the bus.
The bus photo is fantasy and Carrie getting splashed by it is "real life".

And since when is there a rule about not liking beautiful things? Although I am not a fashionista (my footwear is usually limited to flat sandals, sneakers and in the winter fuzzy boots) I do love to look at high fashion as an art form.

As to the "product placement", as a long time fan, I didn't even really see it as it wasn't important to me. And even in one of the most serious scenes in the film, the placement, an iphone was actually made fun of. Carrie looked at it very confused and said she didn't even know how to use it and asked for a regular cellphone.

Maybe the film did miss its mark with hope that it could stand alone without the series, but if you did see the series you would get a clearer understanding about the Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte, and how about above all, their unconditional love/solidarity for one another is always the underlying theme and the reason why fans of the series loved it so much.

remotely resembled the women in that series, and I used to live in NYC, so it isn't a regional thing. But I've met hundreds of gay men exacty like that...and the show was created by a gay man...hmmm, now who was that show's real target audience?

77. I've met women like
Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte. Samantha was a gay man. And I disagree with it not being a regional thing in that New Yorkers are more drawn to the series and the movie as the city is considered the "5th woman of the series). The series showed the best of the city.

57. The misogyny in that review
I found more objectionable than either the movie or the TV show possibly could be. " it was attractive only to gay men and other women": that's more than half of the adult population, but since it apparently doesn't include the reviewer it's ok to take cheap potshots.

To be fair, he does mention what IMHO are valid objections - thin plotting, reliance on cheap jokes, overly padded length. I think that too many people are dismissing this as a chick flick without seeing it just to be fashionable: after all, if it's aimed at women how can it possibly be good? There just won't be enough explosions.

Me? I'm not planning on seeing it, first because I rarely see movies and second because I didn't care for the TV show. I did vote for Obama, if that makes any difference :-)

they looked like they wished they had a scarf over their heads. I found the review spot on.

14. ABC's Nightline is doing a story on the movie. Can you hear Ted Koppel weeping?
To make sure their viewers are well-informed, Nightline also has a report on an 'American Idol' winner.

And I have never seen an episode of "Sex and the City". My "must-see" movie for the summer was Indy IV.

23. Same here, and we saw Indy IV tonight
It was just okay IMO. It seems to be following the Star Trek sequel boom and bust but in reverse; every odd-numbered Indy movie is a winner, every even number kinda sucks.

Sex and the City? Never watched it, never had the desire, ain't my thing.

Edited on Sat May-31-08 01:31 AM by defendandprotect
other plans were cancelled ---

I've seen a lot of the show but not when it was on HBO ---

I've rarely found very much positive about it ---

Shallowness disguised as a woman's right to be free even in loving?

The movie gets even deeper into shallowness as Carrie and Big plan to move to 5th Avenue apartment.
Huge wedding plans -- Vogue layout. In large part, it becomes "Lifestyles of the Rich & Beautiful."
I think this has to hit very poorly with the public with the way the economy is going.

As someone pointed out, post 9/11, S&C changed a great deal with marriage and babies becoming
prominent.

Story lines weren't believable -- didn't hold together.

There were some interesting things about the old show --

I don't like making this comment but Miranda and Carrie often were so badly done up with
make up and hair in this movie that they were frightening.
Carrie in her beautiful gown and Vogue poses often looked like Bride of Frankenstein.
Distractingly scary.
Also both of them certainly looking anorexic.

Thank god he stood her up to spare the humiliation of wearing that in front of all those people...................

37. Don't know how . . .
Edited on Sat May-31-08 11:44 AM by defendandprotect
others felt overall about the movie ---
there were mainly females in audience, but also some males --- coupled -- romantic.

Comments I heard as we exited were about Carrie's appearance -- "long face, don't wear hair parted
in middle" . . . etc. Make up comments.

The wedding dress was so beautiful -- but I think we have to talk about anorexia and these "stars."

PLUS, whoever did make up and hair for this movie should be cited as "worst ever."

IMO, in many situations where people want to suggest a truth they feel ---
like Miranda's honest comments to Big about marriage ---
and perhaps it is even a very general truth/? ---
TV and movies always then want to nullify and stamp out what was said.
So I thought the comment to Big and his reaction were very real and that
Carrie understood it when she heard it. IMO, it was the CENTER of the plot --
I think we could all feel the truth of that statement. Marriage is bad for relationships.

There are counter-truths to it, as well --
People get rid of people in their lives but they also have a huge hunger to "replace those bodies"
as a divorced friend of mine put it when she and her husband split up and he married anther woman
with two kids almost immediately!

49. Well I totally disagree that Marriage is bad for relationships.
I've had a thirty year one that has been fabulous. People CAN be faithful and love one another. But to me, what Miranda said was not really that big of a deal anyway - Big wasn't going to show up no matter what......Carrie let the wedding get huge and he didn't want that.

night and I'm telling you, there were so many parts in the movie that I laughed out loud (that weren't supposed to be funny) the theater was full of the roving women bands come to see this and it was awful. The movie was awful, and it was about sixty minutes too long.

And we wonder why we can't get a female president..............

53. Have no desire to see it at all.
Same thing goes for: Friends, Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond, and whatever corny caucasian humor that spews out from the tv. The same also applies to: Cheers/it's reincarnations, Roseanne, 90210, and Baywatch. Even though I'm white, I'd rather bait an alligator with my manhood than watch any of the above shows.

On a similar note can't stand: Leno, Letterman, O'Brien, Kimmel, and their corny humor.

Perhaps I'm old/grumpy/spoiled. Growing up I enjoyed: The Jefferson's, Happy Days, and M*A*S*H...after that high quality of tv anything that follows is sorely lacking. I must admit that I enjoyed the first few seasons of Married With Children though, and addicted to The Amazing Race.

56. I think its
been established that our media is extremely shallow and generally populate news casts with mindless stories. But at the same time we all have the choice to turn off our televisions and not goto the theater to see the movie. If the show and the movie don't appeal to you then don't watch it simple as that.

63. We are supposed to suspend a lot of disbelief to watch that dreck
Sarah Jessica Parker is not an attractive woman. We are instead TOLD that we are supposed to find her attractive. If you
think I'm wrong, look at how many Best Dressed lists she's on, and consider that her biggest endorsement is makeup. It's not even
so much that any of them are unattractive, it's that we are supposed to believe that four middle aged women really do
define themselves by the shoes they wear and how many men they've gone though in search of an ACCEPTABLE one. How undignified.
I can't believe women are lining up to watch that insult to their dignity.

The previous times weren't enjoyable for anyone, so we're pretty sure the new one isn't going to be fun, either.

believes in true love and has lived through the heartbreak of going away for a while
to earn a living only to find that shallow sex, booze and lies filled your absence
while your most beautiful woman and partner in the world was sucked in by it all.

Yeah, a must see unless you have lived on the heartbroken side of it for a quarter century.

It seems to me just another time when people can pretend they're above it all and feel good about themselves. Meanwhile, not everyone needs a "message" in a movie. Some people just want to be entertained and I found the movie to be that (though a bit long).
