1. Match Game had staying power.
It was as much a sitcom as it was a game show.

Plus, everybody got to drink booze on stage.

They couldn't remake it properly. It wasn't as much about the suggestive questions as it was the chemistry amongst the celeb panel and emcee, and how the contestants fared. It was an event.

These days, game shows are flashy lights and some S&M-wannabe host being outright crude toward the contestants.

34. Do sign up for Game Show Network.
It's worth it.

And I vote for Match Game as the show I most miss. Charles Nelson Reilly, Brett Somers, Richard Dawson, and all the double-entendres you could stand. Love it!

21. Pardon me, but....
The Joker's Wild was hosted by the late great JACK BARRY (in the 1970s):

"The Winker" (who is a right-wing nutjob!) hosted Tic Tac Dough (shown weekdays on GSN)!

Wink did the video-game version:

I thought he did it on TV for a while, either
before or after Jack Berry, but I guess he
only did a couple of shows....

On edit:

I still think he's a dick though....

29. What's My Line still airs late at night on
the Game Show Network. The episodes are shown in order. Right now they are in early 1954 I believe. I don't recognize all of the Mystery Guests, but it's a treat to watch a game show in which the panelists dressed up, everyone treated each other with respect, and a contestant's prize never amounted to more than $50.00. They weren't consumed by greed, just came on to have a good time - and it showed.

11. Quite possibly the cheesiest game show ever
"Hollywood Squares". The son of the host played MLB for a while. The son's name was Pete LaCock, Jr. So for fairly obvious reasons, the HS host changed his name. I met Mr. Lacock Sr. at Wrigley Field some years back when his son played for the Cubs. Nice fella. And who could ever forget "Let's make a deal"?

12. I loved "Let's Make a Deal"! So much greed and begging for humiliation in one room!
When I was 11 in 1966, my family and I were in the audience for a game show called "You Don't Say". To be honest, I don't even remember the point of the game--only that the cameras were on me for a good 20 seconds when they showed us during the credits. As with all game shows, they air about a month after they're filmed, and on the day ours was to air, my parents wouldn't let me stay home from school to see myself on TV. There were no VCRs in those days, and I doubt anyone saved original tapes, so my close-up is lost forever:cry:.

13. Monty Hall ROCKED!!!
Every weekday at 12:30 I watched Let's Make a Deal. And mom got pissed. She thought it was stupid. She didn't see the fun of people making complete idiots of themselves while wearing funny costumes. Monty made jokes that went over some peoples' heads.

"And NOW, it's time for America's TOP TRADER, TV's BIG DEALER.................
MONTY HALL!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

And who could forget Jay with the box and the lovely Carol Merrill????

And the term "Zonked"???

Oh, and the original Jeopardy with Art Fleming was cool. That's why I have a head full of useless information. :D

"Press Your Luck" has to be my favorite long lost game show. I used to watch reruns of it on the USA Network when I was in elementary school! Yeah, I'm not sure it actually involved any skills or knowledge, but it was entertaining all the same.

35. Did you hear the story about the guy who studied Press Your Luck....
Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 08:28 AM by AngryOldDem
...to the point of even taping episodes and slowing them down, until he discovered the pattern as to where the Big Bucks would stop on the board? He was on the show as a contestant forever, and damned near cleaned them out until the caught on. I saw that one some kind of game show retrospective show.

EDIT: WHOOPS! It was the Whammies the guy learned to avoid...not the Big Bucks. (In the interest of fairness and accuracy.)

41. That is interesting
I don't remember hearing that, and it's intriguing because I didn't know that there was any real pattern to the way the squares lit up on the board, and had assumed it was totally random. That's cool that the guy figured that out!

I love to watch the old "Let's Make a Deal" show. They gave away cars, fur coats (something that is unheard of now)

and had to keep my foot elevated. It still is my guilty pleasure, though I'm not a big fan of game shows, and think that John O'Hurley is as personable a host as Richard Dawson. Actually, I think he's channeling him, LOL. :D
