I live on a boat and have no connection to the grid. I have a generator, but want to use it as little as possible. We just installed two killer Kyocera panels that feed directly into the batteries and charge them all day long. Other than the water heater, they are pretty much running the show now. It is really sweet!
I am a big fan of earthships. I'd love to live off the grid, but just don't see that as a likely scenario for us. But if I could hook up a simple system to power a portion of our needs, that would be very satisfying.
but some power companies are subsidizing. I have a friend in Texas who is getting money back from the power company. He feeds into the grid and his meter goes backwards. How cool is that?
I haven't gone as far as checking with our local power company about subsidies/credits, but we like the general idea very much, and I hope that within a year or two we can dip our toes into something solar.
